Barry Martin Trost, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A widely regarded researcher and educator in the field of chemistry, Dr. Trost recently celebrated 30 years as a professor with Stanford University. His area of focus, syntheses involving organic compounds, is noted as an important field for solving problems in medicine and electronics by designing structures with functions that involve chemical properties. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Trost has held more than 125 special university lectureships and presented more than 270 plenary lectures at national and international meetings, in addition to serving in multiple visiting professorships. He has published two books and more than 950 scientific articles. Additionally, Dr. Trost edited a major compendium entitled, "Comprehensive Organic Synthesis," which consists of nine volumes.

As a prominent leader in the advancement of the concept of atom economy, Dr. Trost has received more than 50 honors and awards since the inception of his career. However, one of his most noted accomplishments is having the Tsuji Trost reaction and Trost ligand named after him. He was selected as the recipient of the ACS Award in Pure Chemistry, ACS Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Arthur C. Cope Award, the Roger Adams Award and Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, among many others. Dr. Trost was most recently awarded the Linus Pauling Medal Award by the Puget Sound, Oregon and Portland Sections of the American Chemical Society in 2015. To date, he has been presented with honorary degrees from Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 and Technion Israel Institute of Technology.

Since entering the field of chemistry, Dr. Trost has served on dozens of advisory committees, panels and boards. His most recent appointment was as an editorial advisory board member with the Reaxys Database (Beilstein CrossFire), a position he has held for more than a decade. Dr. Trost is an editorial board member of the Journal of Organic Chemistry - An Asian Journal, editorial advisory board member of the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry and editorial board member of the Central European Journal of Chemistry, among other appointments. Additionally, he is a former member of the CAL/EPA Green Chemistry Scientific Advisory Panel and NRC Committee on the Review of Basic Energy Sciences Catalysis Program. He has also served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Prior to pursuing a scientific career, Dr. Trost received a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. He went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a PhD in 1965. His thesis research was entitled, "The Structure and Reactivity of Enolate Anions." Upon completing formal education, Dr. Trost served as a professor of chemistry with the University of Wisconsin-Madison for more than two decades. He joined Stanford University as a professor of chemistry in 1987, and became a Tamaki Professor of Humanities and Sciences in 1990.

Dr. Trost is heavily involved in the scientific community as an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Chemical Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and previously served as a chairman of the NIH Medicinal Chemistry Study Section.
