Arlen Ellard Viste, PhD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    SIOUX FALLS, SD, October 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Arlen Ellard Viste, PhD, a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Viste celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A professor emeritus of chemistry at Augustana University, Dr. Viste taught at the esteemed institution for 38 years, retiring in 2002. Receiving an Orin M. Lofthus Distinguished Professorship during 1989 to 1992, he was also known as the Stanley L. Olsen Chair of Moral Values from 1999 to 2002. His dedication to the field of chemistry enabled him to begin his teaching as an assistant professor of chemistry at his undergraduate alma mater in Minnesota from 1962 to 1963 before becoming a National Science Foundation fellow at Columbia University in N.Y.C. from 1963 to 1964. He then joined the faculty of Augustana University as an assistant professor, remaining in that position for four years before being promoted to associate professor for another five years. Earning the position of full professor in 1973 until retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed the environment, as well as the students and faculty at the Lutheran university.

Receiving a Bachelor's degree at St. Olaf College in 1958 and a PhD at the University of Chicago in 1962, Dr. Viste had the pleasure to work with Henry Taube, later awarded a Nobel Prize in 1983, while pursuing his PhD and with Harry Barkus Gray, an internationally renowned research chemist, on his postdoctoral work. Furthermore, Dr. Viste has been a member of the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry of London, the South Dakota Academy of Science, the Midwest Association of Chemistry Teachers in Liberal Arts Colleges, and several honor societies.

Dr. Viste is also involved with MolecVUE, which stands for Molecular Computation and Visualization in Undergraduate Education. The organization's area of interest includes chemistry, biochemistry, material science, molecular biology, and other areas where the ruling paradigm is molecules. Their objective is to enhance undergraduate instruction by developing and employing modern computational and visualization tools and to provide the methods, techniques, and tools that they develop to other science instructors. Dr. Viste is particularly involved with work on the education side of quantum chemistry and inorganic reaction mechanisms.

The recipient of a Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr Faculty Excellence Award in 1999, Dr. Viste has been included in nearly 50 editions of Who's Who, to include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Viste was married to Elizabeth Ann Lindbeck for 51 years until her passing in 2010. He has three children. In his free time, Dr. Viste enjoys mentoring young students through his church and Augustus University. He is a practicing Lutheran, and as a hobby works with DNA genealogy.
