Since 1991, Dr. Zhang has been an indispensable member of the faculty team at the Pennsylvania State University, where he has served as an expert in electric engineering and materials engineering. He is a distinguished professor since 2006. Dr. Zhang is a frequent guest speaker with the electrical engineering and materials engineering industry, international conferences, and universities, worldwide. He holds patents for reaxor polymers as well as terpolymers based on polyvinylidede fluoride and tri-fluoroethylene. These polymers can be used for the haptic buzzing, robotics, minimally invasive surgical devices, portable air conditioners, and personalized cooling, Dr. Zhang's work can be found everywhere in the world of today.
Dr. Zhang is a graduate of Nanjing University, China, where he earned a BS in Electronic Physics in 1981. While earning a Ph. D. in Solid State Physics from Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Zhang received a 1982 David Rank Award from the university's physics department. He joined the faculty of Pennsylvania State University in 1991. He was recognized as a leader in the ultrasonic technologies, electroactive polymer actuators, sensors, and artificial muscles, ferroelectrics, smart materials and devices, electrocaloric cooling, and has served in the program committee of the international ultrasonic symposium, Novel Materials for Electronics Miniaturization, World Congress on Biomimetics and Artificial Muscles, Ferroelectricity.
In 1999, Dr. Zhang won the Outstanding Research Award and 2008 Premier Research Award, from the Penn State Engineering Society. Dr. Zhang has delivered Plenary and Keynote speeches in many international meetings. Dr. Zhang was the plenary speaker of the 14th International Symposium of Electrets in 2011. He Co-founded the StrategicPolymer Sciences Inc. in 2006 (Now Novasentis) and served as Chairman of the board till 2011.
For his achievement in electronic engineering, Dr. Zhang was selected for inclusion for five volumes of Who's Who in America from 2006 to 2012, two volumes of Who's Who in American Education (2006-2008), the 9th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 2007 volume of Who's Who in the World. In 2015, Dr. Zhang received a Faculty Scholar Medal from Pennsylvania State University and was recognized as a 2015 Shanghai Overseas Outstanding Scholar by the city of Shanghai, China. He shares his success with his wife, Ailan Cheng, and their children, Andrew and Michelle.
