A retired cultural anthropology educator, writer, and lecturer, Dr. Bateson has left quite an impression on everything in which she became involved. Named professor emerita in 2002 at George Mason University after spending 15 years as a Clarence J. Robinson professor of anthropology and English, her previous years were spent teaching and lecturing at such institutions as Harvard University, Northeastern University, Spelman College, and Amherst College, where she also served as dean for seven years, as well as abroad in the Philippines and Iran.
In 2011, Dr. Bateson gave a series of six public lectures at Boston College, entitled "Love Across Difference," which she plans to have turned into a book in the near future. Today, she continues to serve as a visiting scholar at the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College. Dr. Bateson has authored and co-authored dozens of articles and more than 10 books throughout her career. Some of her books include "With a Daughter's Eye: A Memoir of Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson," an account of her upbringing by two famous parents, and "Composing A Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom", which talks about the contributions and improvisations of engaged older adults, written to raise consciousness of the changing life cycle as well as to encourage older adults to claim a voice for the future.
Recognized in her field for also having published many monographs, Dr. Bateson has served on many advisory boards, including the National Center on Atmospheric Research, which deals with climate change. She was the founder of GrannyVoter, now a program of Generations United where she is developing ongoing efforts to involve seniors on behalf of children and future generations. Furthermore, Dr. Bateson is a national co-chair of Seniors4Kids, and a fellow of the International Leadership Forum and spent 30 years as president of the Institute for Intercultural Studies in New York from 1979 to 2009. Dr. Bateson is a longtime member of the American Anthropological Association, the Lindisfarne Association, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Between the years of 1961 and 1988, Dr. Bateson was a Ford Foundation fellow, a National Science Foundation fellow, a Wenner-Gren Foundation fellow, a Bunting Institute fellow, and a Guggenheim Foundation fellow. She was the recipient of a 1996 Radcliff Alumnae Recognition Award, a 2000 John P. McGovern Award in Behavior Sciences by the Smithsonian Institute, and a 2010 Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity by the Media Ecology Association. She has also been highlighted in more than 40 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who of American Women.
Born in 1939 to Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, Dr. Bateson received a BA in Semitic languages, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, at Radcliffe College in 1960 and a PhD in linguistics and Middle Eastern studies at Harvard University in 1963, supported by NDFL and Ford Foundation grants and an honorary Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. She is the wife of Barkev Kassarjian, the mother of Sevanne Margaret Kassarjian, and a grandmother of two. Dr. Bateson also holds an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Fordham University, the University of Redlands, DePaul University, Marygrove College, and Mills College.
