Principal Attorney and Owner of the Law Offices of Lawrence J. Sherman PLLC since 2007, Mr. Sherman has previously served as counsel to Slevin and Hart, Professional Corporation, from 2005 to 2007. From 2002 to 2006 and from 1977 to 1981, he maintained a private practice in Washington. He was also a partner at Brown and Sherman, LLP in Washington from 2001 to 2002, and he served as counsel at Deso, Thomas, Spevack, Weitzman, and Rost, Professional Corporation from 1991 to 2000.

From 1981 to 1986, he was a partner at Sherman and Lapidus in Washington. Additionally, Mr. Sherman was an associate at Lichtman, Abeles, Anker and Nagle, Professional Corporation from 1975 to 1977, an executive director of Migrant Legal Action Program in Washington from 1970 to 1975, and an associate at Cohen and Berfield from 1969 to 1970. He began his career as an appellate attorney at the National Labor Relations Board in 1966, serving on in this capacity for three years.

Outside of his career at the law office, Mr. Sherman served an adjunct professor at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring, Maryland from 1988 to 2000. He was also a principal at Managing Human Resources for 21st Century in Washington from 1990 to 1999.

Mr. Sherman grew up during the political period surrounding the civil rights movement and Vietnam War protests. While growing up in Pittsburgh, he also saw factories being shut down and the adverse effects these closures had on the lives of factory workers and their families. The heightened sensitivities gained from these experiences led Mr. Sherman to pursue a career in law that focused on securing and protecting the labor and civil rights of workers. He has won landmark cases on behalf of migrant and seasonal workers as well as employees, unions and non-profit organizations. A significant moment in his career was the appointment by the late Judge Charles Richey as a special counsel of a judicial oversight committee monitoring compliance with an agency-wide injunction that required the Department of Labor to enforce strictly labor legislation and regulations that it administers to protect farm workers. Since entering private practice, Mr. Sherman has won a series of labor cases that broadened the rights of federal labor unions to bargain over work practices and pay, along with numerous arbitration awards and court opinions upholding the rights of employees and unions in the private and public sectors.

Mr. Sherman received a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in 1966 with special recognition in the field of labor law, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. He was licensed to practice in D.C. in 1967, California in 1967, Maryland in 1985, the U.S. District Court of D.C., the U.S. District Court of Maryland, the U.S. Claims Court, and the D.C., 4th, and Federal Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. He has contributed numerous articles to professional journals.

Mr. Sherman is also an active member of multiple organizations. He served the D.C. Bar as a member of the labor and employment law section from 1983 to 1984 and from 1978 to 1984, respectively, as well as co-chairman of the steering committee from 1981 to 1985, and as a member of the litigation section. He also formerly was a member of the Maryland Employment Lawyers Association, the Lawyers Coordinating Committee, AFL-CIO.

The son of Ben E. and Leonora C. Sherman, Mr. Sherman has been married to Iris Shapiro for 50 years. They have two children together: Rachel L. and Jessica S. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, photography, traveling, reading, and music.

For his outstanding and continuous contributions to his field and legal justice, Mr. Sherman was awarded the prestigious AV rating from Martindale Hubble, the highest honor available from a survey of colleagues. He has also been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Industry and multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the World.
