A widely regarded expert in the areas of biostatistics, Dr. Wong focuses on health impact of influenza, personal factors, and ambient air pollution, and on statistical modeling for population-based spatial and temporal data in environmental health studies. He is perhaps best known internationally as a multi-city principal investigator for applying statistical modeling for assessment and prevention of risks of exposure to ambient air pollution, ambient virus circulation and environmental thermal stress, and the vulnerabilities of lifestyle groups. Dr. Wong has been a charted statistician in the U.K. since 1993, and has been an elected fellow of the Faculty of Public Health with the Royal College of Physicians since 2008.

Continually recognized for his contributions to health care and science, Dr. Wong was selected as the recipient of the Excellent Research Award by the HKSAR Government in 2007. This award was presented in recognition of his use of routine statistics on morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the population to make an estimation of variations in health care needs between small areas of Hong Kong. Dr. Wong was also named the recipient of the Poster Display Award, which he received from the Hospital Authority Convention in 2000 in recognition of his research showing the correlation of socioeconomic and demographic variation with mortality and hospital admissions ratios. Earlier in his career, he received Earth Science Awards to commemorate his involvement with studies led by Professor AJ Hedley on health effects of air pollution in children. The award was presented by HE Governor C. Patten of Hong Kong in 1994.

Prior to entering a career in biostatistics, Dr. Wong attended the University of Manchester, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Management Sciences, with honors, in 1980. For the next two years, he served as a statistics and evaluation officer with the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong. Dr. Wong went on to complete a Master of Science in Medical Statistics at the University of London in 1987 and a PhD in Risk Modeling at The University of Hong Kong in 1992. During this time, he served as a senior technician with The University of Hong Kong.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Wong has enjoyed various roles with the department of community medicine and school of public health with The University of Hong Kong, including as a lecturer and assistant professor between 1993 and 2002, and associate professor between 2002 and 2015. From 2002 to 2004, he was recognized as a visiting professor with The First Military Medical University, now known as The Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China. Dr. Wong is a founding member as well as the initiating president of the Hong Kong Music Platform, a nonprofit-making society for facilitating appreciation of and pursuance for the art of music, with a view to channeling a society in good harmony through the effect of music as a positive personal and environmental factor.
