Leonard E. Mellberg Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Mellberg is a well regarded physicist in the area of ocean acoustics propagation, a field that came into prominence during the Cold War. With nuclear equipped submarines a tactical concern for the world, his achievements in ocean physics, ocean acoustic propagation, antisubmarine warfare acoustics, Arctic Sea ice morphology, and lighter than air vehicles were an invaluable resource for the U.S. defense industry. Mr. Mellberg's career revolved around ocean acoustics, and the milestone was receiving the 1977 Naval Underwater Systems Center Excellence in Science Award, among numerous civilian awards. He currently holds the position of chief scientist at Ocean Physics Associates in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts to Evert and Dororthy Mellberg in 1935, Mr. Mellberg excelled at the sciences and loved physics most of all. As a young man of 18 years old, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the occupational forces in what was then West Berlin, on the Western Allies side of the Berlin Wall. Back in the U.S., he submitted to his love of physics and earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1961.

From 1961 to 1966, Mr. Mellberg conducted postgraduate studies in the University of Connecticut, and concurrently served as a research physicist with the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, Connecticut. In 1968, he earned a Master of Science at Trinity College and accepted a position with the NATO Undersea Research Center in LaSpezia, Italy as well as the Office of Naval Research in London. In 1972, he went on to the Naval Underwater Systems Center in Newport, Rhode Island, serving for 19 years. Mr. Mellberg became senior scientist of Marine Acoustics Incorporated in 1991, and in 1994, he was welcomed as a chief scientist of Scientific Applications International Corporation.

In 2000, Mr. Mellberg joined Ocean Physics Associates after four decades of listening to the secrets of the sea. Over the course of his prolific career, he has accrued distinguished memberships with the American Institute of Physics, a fellow Acoustic Society of America, senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the American Geophysical Union, the Oceanic Society of the IEEE, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which presented him with a 1977 Service Award. Mr. Mellberg was honored for his services to American military with a 1972 Award from the NATO Supreme Allied Commander of Atlantic Service, a 1975 Commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet Commendation, a 1974 Task Force 77 Commander Commendation, a 1977 and 1984 Excellence in Science Award from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a 1991 Civilian Navy Meritorious Service Medal as well as a 1985 Civilian Navy Meritorious Arctic Commendation from the U.S. Department of Navy. For services to the advancement of ocean physics , Mr. Mellberg was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Whos' Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, and two volumes of Who's Who in the East from 1999 to 2000.

In his civic sphere, Mr. Mellberg has served as the president of the Verdandi Swedish Cultural Foundation as well as a director of the board for the Verdandi Chorus of the American Union of Swedish Singers, both in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Mellberg has also served as president of the eastern division of the Veterans Chorus.
