John R. Moore, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Moore, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Moore celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A retired agricultural and resource economics professor, Dr. Moore obtained emeritus status in 1995 after spending 33 years teaching and working in administration at the University of Maryland. First recruited by the university in 1962 as an associate professor, he later spent 27 years as a professor in world food situation and food marketing. In between those years, he served as assistant dean of international programs for 15 years.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Moore attended college locally, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at The Ohio State University in 1951. He then was accepted to Cornell University, where he pursued a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics, graduating in 1955. Finally, in 1959, he completed a PhD in Agricultural Economics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

After completing his undergraduate work, Dr. Moore began working as a county 4-H Club agent for Ohio Cooperative Extension Service, followed by the completion of two graduate research assistant appointments before obtaining his first teaching role at Michigan State University as an assistant professor in 1958. Four years later, he traveled to New Delhi to work as a marketing specialist and economic consultant for the Ford Foundation before returning home two years later to begin his career at the University of Maryland.

Some of Dr. Moore's research included U.S. investment in food processing in Latin America, food grain marketing in India, application of antitrust laws to agricultural industries, the role of agriculture trade in economics development, and bargaining power potential in agriculture. The results of his findings were reported in documents that were submitted to sponsored agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the World Bank, the American Soybean Association, and the Food and Agriculture Organization, among others. He was also the senior author of the books "Market Structure of Agriculture Industries" in 1964, "U.S. Investment in Latin American Food Processing" in 1966, and "Indian Food Grain Market" in 1972.

Throughout his career, Dr. Moore spent time as an economic consultant for the Federal Trade Commission, the World Bank in India, Nigeria, and the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Indonesia, Malawi, Haiti, Liberia, and Egypt, and for the Food and Agriculture Organization in Beijing. He has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Spain and England. Dr. Moore was a longtime member of the American Agricultural Economic Association, the American Economic Association, and the International Agricultural Economic Association. He has been serving as chairman of the board of trustees for the Trees for the Future since 1997 as well as a board chairman since 2007, and he has also been a member of the board of visitors for the School of Music at the University of Maryland since 2011.

Highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World since 1991, Dr. Moore was also a 1985 recipient of an International Honor Award by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington and a 1986 recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation. He has also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1951 to 1953, where he reached the status of lieutenant. Since 1953, Dr. Moore has two children with his late wife, Marjorie Ann Coy, who passed away in 2011.
