Now professor emeritus with the school of medicine at the University of Miami, Dr. Lubs has dedicated 49 years to solving the mystery of mental retardation and related genetic diseases. Working with both clinical investigation and academic research, he has identified a number of genetic factors that contribute to inherited cognitive conditions. Dr. Lubs notably served both the Mailman Center for Child Development and the larger school of medicine at the University of Miami from 1979 to 2004.
Dr. Lubs began his illustrious career by earning an MD from Yale University in 1954, after graduating from Washington and Lee University. He served his internship with the Yale-New Haven Hospital and went on to work with the U.S. Public Health Service in a clinical endocrinology capacity with the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Lubs focused on the genetics aspect of medicine as a special trainee from 1957 to 1963, conducting research across the National Institutes of Health, the University of Michigan, and Yale University.
Previously, Dr. Lubs served the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut, as a clinical investigator for three years. He has also served for many years as an associate professor with Yale and director with the associated private diagnostic clinic. He was recognized for his services as a medical investigator with a 1960 to 1963 VA Clinical Investigatorship, as well as a Career Development Award from the U.S. Public Health Service from 1963 to 1973. Dr. Lubs is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, as well as the American Board of Medical Genetics.
From 1968 to 1979, Dr. Lubs worked with the University of Colorado, where he taught biophysics and genetics as well as pediatrics. The subject of genetics would go on to capture his research fervor once again, and in 1979, Dr. Lubs accepted a position as the Director of the Genetics Division in Pediatrics at the University in Miami. He went on to earn a 1986 Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. International Award for Research in Mental Retardation, and served until he accepted the post of professor emeritus in 2004. Thanks to Dr. Lubs' research, the causes of many cognitive disorders can be traced to genetic factors, and future scientists can identify and target them to reduce the incidence of mental retardation. However, Dr. Lubs is best known for his work on X-Linked intellectual disability, beginning with the report of Fragile X Syndrome which is the most commonly inherited form of mental retardation. He also contributed to the scientific basis for Prenatal Diagnosis.
In 2017, he and his wife, Betty Lou Lubs, started a research endowment for The Science Society and the Arts Conference.
