Focusing his work on hydraulics, chemically-active fluid dynamics, and environmental exposure and risk assessment, his work on sediment-contaminant transport modeling has been recognized internationally. He has been at the frontlines working on some of the world's most disastrous radioactively-contaminated sites, including the Fuskushima Nuclear Plant in Japan, the Chernobyl Nuclear Site in the Ukraine, the Mayak Nuclear Site in Russia, the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site in Kazakhstan, and the Hanford and the Los Alamos Nuclear Sites in the United States.
Established in 2006, Yasuo Onishi Consulting, LLC, offers flow and environmental risk assessment, toxic waste management and consulting, and strategic planning for economic development. He is also the director of Fukushima Reconstruction Creation Laboratory of Higashi Nippon International University in Iwaki City, Fukushima, Japan, working on the recovery of Fukushima environment, economy and mental health suffered from 2011Fukushima Nuclear Plant accident. His experience includes more than 30 years of experience at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy's (USDOE) national laboratories, where Dr. Onishi spent a third of his time as chief scientist. He previously spent eight years as the organization's manager of research programs where he developed and supervised dozens of Japanese environmental studies, including those on the low level radioactive waste disposal at Rokkasho Mura, Japan, from disposal system conceptual development to successfully obtaining its site operational license, as well as on the high level radioactive waste disposal. He also served as a research engineer at Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research at the University of Iowa in the early 1970s.
For more than 20 years, several of Dr. Onishi's sediment-contaminant transport models have been considered the world's most advanced contaminant (radionuclide and toxic chemical) transport codes for rivers, estuaries, coastal waters, and lakes, with his modeling approach adapted by researchers in several countries. His groundbreaking, toxic chemical transport/risk assessment methodology unlocked a stochastic risk assessment modeling approach to hazardous materials, pesticides, and heavy metals in U.S., while his simple, yet robust models have become official International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) surface water radiological assessment models. Dr. Onishi also developed the most advanced computer code to simulate interacting flows and chemical reactions, and has been responsible for assessing removal, liquidation of radioactive waste, and deep ocean disposal of CO2 gas generated by a power plant for possible mitigation of global climate change.
Dr. Onishi has maintained the role of senior partner of Think Tank Sophia Bank in Tokyo since 2008, an organization whose mission is to incubate new social systems by fostering social entrepreneurs. He is also an adjunct professor at Washington State University (WSU), where environmental research is one of the pillars of the civil and environmental engineering department's research portfolio while providing a number of research laboratories for students. Teaching graduate level courses, he is also an advisor and thesis examiner for more than 20 WSU and University of Minnesota graduate students.
The co-author of 16 books, including "Principles of Health Risk Assessment" in 1985, Dr. Onishi also served as senior editor of a book on Chenobyl, and has been credited with more than 200 published papers and reports. In 2007, he co-hosted a workshop at the U.N. conference on climate change impacts, and was also featured on the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service scientific television program "Nova." Dr. Onishi has also been active as an advisor and committee member for the IAEA, and is a former committee member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Onishi has a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Osaka Prefecture and a PhD in Hydraulics from the University of Iowa. He was honored with two Energy Secretary Awards, the highest non-monetary award of the USDOE in 2011 for his contributions to responses in the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident as well the 2010 oil spill accident in the Gulf of Mexico. A former chairman of the task committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Onishi has been a life-time adjunct member of the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements since 1983.
