Michael Gabriel, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Gabriel has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of psychology and higher education

SAINT AUGUSTINE, FL, November 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Michael Gabriel, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gabriel celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Now retired, psychology professor Dr. Gabriel spent his years in the field split between California, Texas, and Illinois. After completing his PhD, he first became an assistant professor at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, for three years before becoming a staff psychologist at Pacific State Hospital in Pomona. Two years later, he became a National Institute of Mental Health senior postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at Irvine. Relocating to Texas in 1973, he worked as an assistant and associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin until 1982.

Commencing his career at the University of Illinois, Dr. Gabriel joined the university as a professor of psychology in the Beckman Institute, where he remained for 22 years until retiring in 2004. During this time, he also briefly served as an appointee for the Center for Advanced Study.

Dr. Gabriel's extensive research has resulted in the pioneering of methods for simultaneous multi-site recording and analysis of neuron activity during active avoidance learning in behaving animals, as well as performance of the only neurologic analysis of the neural substrates of active avoidance learning in animals, and the first documentation of neuron activity in multiple learning-relevant brain areas throughout the course of active avoidance learning. Furthermore, Dr. Gabriel has pioneered simultaneous use of de-afferenting lesions and recording of neuron activity in key brain areas to document learning-relevant interactions among involved brain regions, and was the first to demonstrate learning-relevant activity (discrimination and reversal of brief-latency neuron activity) in the medial geniculate nucleus (MGm), a region previously believed to be involved in sensory processing but not learning. These are just a few of the many examples of Dr. Gabriel's many years of study.

Throughout his journey in psychology, Dr. Gabriel chaired the Neuronal Pattern Analysis Group at the Beckman Institute, was an ad-hoc member of biopsychology review panel for the National Institute of Mental Health, and, since 2000, has been serving as a member of the neuroinformatics review panel for the National Institutes of Health. He was also a member of the editorial board for both Neural Plasticity and Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, and served as co-editor for two books: "Learning and Computational Neuroscience: Foundations of Adaptive Networks" in 1989 and "Neurobiology of Cingulate Cortex and Limbic Thalmus" in 1993.

An elected fellow of the American Psychological Society and the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society, and a member of Sigma Chi, Dr. Gabriel received numerous grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Drug Abuse. He has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, every edition of Who's Who in the Midwest since 2000, as well as several other editions such as Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World. Married to Sonda S. Walsh, Dr. Gabriel has one son from a previous marriage.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Michael Gabriel, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
