Jow Lay Huang, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Over the course of his extensive career in engineering, Dr. Huang has published well over 300 papers in his field, and has served as a guest editor for two international academic journals.

The dean of the office of research and development at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) since 2002, a research-led, comprehensive university in Taiwan, as well as a chair professor of the department of materials science and engineering, Dr. Huang has been in academia for more than 20 years. During his years at NCKU, he has served as chairman of the department of materials science and engineering, associate dean, and president of the affiliated senior industrial vocational continuing high school education. The success of his career in higher education has been recognized many times over. Furthermore, as the Director of the Center for Micro/Nano Science and Technology (CMNST), National Cheng Kung University, 2010-2012, Dr. Huang has introduced several projects/methodologies that have provided a huge advantage to the center in terms of research outputs with research publications in high impact journals, patents and substantial revenue as well as for further growth of the center to a new height.

Dr. Huang has worked as a President in National Kaohsiung University, Taiwan from 2012-2016, where his immaculate contributions show a new path toward the academic and research excellence in the university. Apart from the above accomplishments, he has been assigned with additional responsibility as co-chair, National Program on Nano Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan, 2011-2016. He has also visited Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan as visiting professor in 2007. Moreover, he also has large experience in industry as Staff Research Engineer and Research Scientists at Ceramics Research Center, Champion Spark Plue Co, Detriot, Michigan, USA, 1985-1989 and Ceramatec Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, 1983-1985 respectively.

In 1996, Dr. Huang received a Best PhD Dissertation Instruction Award, granted by the educational department of the Republic of China government in Taiwan, and in 2002, he was honored with an Outstanding Engineering Professor Award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, given by the President of Taiwan. Outside of education, Dr. Huang also spent two years as general secretary of the Chinese Society for Materials Science from 2001 to 2002.

Over the course of his extensive career in engineering, Dr. Huang has published well over 300 papers in his field, and has served as a guest editor for two international academic journals. Furthermore, he has delivered countless speeches, including at many World Academy of Ceramics conferences, where he currently serves as a member. The World Academy of Ceramics has a large influence on the development and education of material-related culture, technological, industrial, historic, and artistic fields, and Dr. Huang was honored with inclusion in 2010 as the first and only professor from Taiwan at that time. He is also a member of the Japanese Ceramic Society, The National Institute of Ceramics Engineers, and the American Ceramic Society, and served as president of the Taiwan Association for Coatings and Thin Film Technology, where he was also the recipient of an Outstanding Contribution Award in 2002.

Additionally, Dr. Huang holds many patents in his field, including for dense ceramics containing a solid solution, a method for making said ceramics, the production and sintering of reaction bonded silicon nitride composites containing silicon carbine whiskers or silicon nitride powders, and the production of a sintered reaction bonded silicon nitride insulator. He also holds patents for tube chemical gas deposited method of preparing titanium nitride coated titanium carbine for titanium carbide/silicon nitride composites, and for the manufacture of complex shaped Cr3C2/AI2O3 components by injection molding techniques.

A graduate of the department of material science at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, Dr. Huang later obtained a PhD at the University of Utah in the U.S. in 1983. A two-time recipient of an Outstanding Research Award from the National Science Council in Taiwan in 2000 and 2001, he was also highlighted in Who's Who in Asia and Who's Who in World several times. Married to Mayce Huang for close to 40 years, Dr. Huang has one child.
