A long time art historian, museum curator, and educator, Dr. Czuma was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1935. Studying extensively in his country, he first earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Western Art at Jagiellon University in Krakow in 1953 and 1957 respectively, before completing a postgraduate training camp in Breslau. Dr. Czuma then traveled to India to complete graduate studies at Banares Hindu University and the University of Calcutta in 1958 and 1959, followed by graduate studies in Southeast Asia and India with the Faculte des Lettres at Sorbonne in Paris, in 1960 and 1961. Entering the U.S. soon after, he became a research assistant for the Oriental Art Archives Project in the History of Art Department at the University of Michigan while pursuing a PhD in Asian art and culture. Graduating in 1968, he completed a postdoctoral curatorial training program at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1968 to 1969.
Dr. Czuma's extensive background in art history earned him numerous professional positions in the United States. He spent three years as a curator of oriental art at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Then, for 33 years, he was the George P. Bickford Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at The Cleveland Museum of Art beginning in 1972 until retirement in 2005. He also spent several years in between as an adjunct professor of history of Asian art at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland from 1973 to 1990, and then as a Maxeen J. Stone visiting professor of Asian art at the same university until 2000.
Dr. Czuma organized numerous exhibitions and has created numerous catalogs, including "Ancient Cambodian Sculpture", co-authored with Sherman Lee, for the Asia Society in New York in 1969, the "Indian Art from the George P. Bickford Collection" travelling exhibition from 1975 to 1977, and the "Kushan Sculpture: Images from Easrly India" exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Asia Society of New York, and the Seattle Art Museum from 1985 to 1986. With colleague-curators, he co-authored the Cleveland Museum of Art catalogs "Masterworks of Asian Art" in 1998 and "Treasures from the Cleveland Museum of Art" in 2012. Dr. Czuma is the author of numerous articles in the art world. Other exhibitions include "Dances of the Gods: Indian Art Inspired by Music", "Objects in Focus'. In 1989, he spent time in Cambodia in an advisory capacity with a team of Indian and Polish restorers of Angkor temples. During his tenure at the Cleveland Museum of Art Dr. Czuma has built one of the world's greatest collections of Indian, Southeast Asian and Himalayan art. The collection is famous for the diversity and high quality of its objects.
A member of the Association of Asian Studies and the Asia Society, Dr. Czuma has been included in the 60th and 61st editions of Who's Who in America. He received several fellowships and grants, including a Paderewski Foundation Fellowship for studies in India and France from 1958 to 1961, a 1962 Rackham School grant for a research trip to India, a National Defense Fellowship for studies in India from 1965 to 1966, and a Ford Fellowship from 1968 to 1969. He has also received support from the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia and the American Institute for Indian Studies in Chicago from 1979 to 1980. Dr. Czuma received support from the George P. Bickford Foundation for his work in Vietnam in 1990, and received a 1993 Andrew W. Mellon Grant for Research in Tibet and Ladakh.
Dr. Czuma is married to Ingrid Zollinger, with whom he has one daughter, Lesley. He is fluent in English, French, Polish and Sanskrit, with some proficiency in German and Russian.
