A physiologist and professor emeritus, Dr. Wingfield boasts an impressive background in both his area of expertise as well as in higher education. Employed at the University of California, Davis, during the last 10 years of his career in academia, he was earned the positions of distinguished professor and endowed chair in physiology in the department of neurobiology, physiology, and behavior. He previously taught and conducted research at several other universities over the past three decades, including at the University of Washington, where he is now a professor emeritus in the department of biology and a former chair, acting chair, and associate chair.

Dr. Wingfield also researched extensively at Rockefeller University, where he was an associate professor and assistant director from 2011 to 2014, as well as head of the biology directorate of the U.S. National Science Foundation, associate director of the university's field research station, and assistant professor. Officially retiring from University of California, Davis in 2016, Dr. Wingfield continues to conduct research and work within the academic community by lecturing and serving as an environmental endocrinologist, where he formerly spent time developing techniques and theory in the field of endocrinology and environmental endocrinology.

Dr. Wingfield has taught a number of courses, such as Introductory Physiology, Endocrinology, Vertebrate Life Cycles, and Natural History of Birds. He also participated in the core course for graduate students in the animal behavior graduate group and the designated emphasis in organism-environment interaction. His undergraduate teaching previously focused on physiology and endocrinology, with laboratory sessions central in all of these courses. During his years as chair of the department of zoology at the University of Washington, Dr. Wingfield was involved with major curriculum reform to reflect student interests in environment, as well as biomedical and other professions in biological sciences.

An elected fellow of the Animal Behavior Society, where he was also the recipient of The Quest Award and The Exemplar Award, Dr. Wingfield is also a fellow of the American Ornithologist's Union and Elliot Coues Award winner. He is a longtime member of the Society of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology, where he spent two years as president.

Growing up in rural England, Dr. Wingfield's grandparents had a farm, where he loved watching the seasons change and studied the many plants, birds, and animals that lived there. Fast forward to his college years, he studied at the University of Sheffield in England, earning a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, with honors, in 1970, followed by a PhD in Zoology and Comparative Endocrinology at the University College of North Wales in Banglor in 1973. While pursuing his degrees, he was employed as an assistant biologist for the Ministries of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food in Surrey, UK.

Dr. Wingfield received honorary doctorates from the University of Goteborg in Sweden and the University of Sheffield, as well as a Donald S. Farner Medal at the International Symposium Avin Endocrinology in 1996. He also received an Irma T. Hirschl Career Scientist Award by Rockefeller University, a Shannon Award by the National Institutes of Health, an Association of the Study of Animal Behavior Medal, as well as several fellowships and research grants. He has served as a keynote speaker several times, served on various committees as a panel member, chair, and executive committee member, and in other roles for organizations like the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Wingfield also spent years committed to various editorial boards for numerous professional journals, most recently with Current Zoology (formerly Acta Zoologica Sinica) in 2008, and has served on more than a dozen journals as a reviewer. Furthermore, Dr. Wingfield has authored or edited three books and approximately 500 articles in refereed journals and book chapters, and has reviewed close to a dozen books by other authors.
