Richard Hellman Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Endocrinology

A physician and educator, Dr. Hellman possesses more than four decades of expertise in treating endocrine system disorders



    KANSAS CITY, MO, November 23, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Richard Hellman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Hellman is a highly regarded physician in North Kansas City, MO, who brings with him more than 40 years of expertise in the area of endocrine care. As an endocrinologist, he specializes in treating disorders such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, and osteoporosis. In addition to working in private practice as the founding and managing partner at Hellman & Rosen Endocrine Associates, he shares his knowledge and insights in the academic setting as a faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine.

Since 1973, Dr. Hellman has served the UMKC School of Medicine in a variety of roles, including his current positions as clinical professor of medicine and associate program director of the Endocrine Fellowship Program, and preceptor for the Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship Program at Children's Mercy Hospital. When asked why he entered the field of medicine, Dr. Hellman credits the influence of a physician who treated him when he was younger. "He showed me that he had a love for what he was doing and that helping people was the most gratifying thing you can aim to do in a career," he says, adding that his strong interest in science helped to make the decision easy for him.

Dr. Hellman's professionalism and compassionate care has led him to achieve many awards, including the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kansas City Medical Society. This award recognizes the breadth of Dr. Hellman's accomplishments locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, in both academic and clinical settings in the areas of research, teaching, and providing clinical care to his patients. Also noted was his leadership and lifelong commitment to improving patient safety, by both his research into the reduction of medical errors and outcome research, and his national leadership in performance measurement. Dr. Hellman is a three-time recipient of a Distinguished Reviewer Award from Diabetes Care. Other accolades include the 2016 American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award, the inaugural 2015 Innovation Award from the Kansas City Medical Society, a 2011 Teaching Recognition and Appreciation Award for Teaching from the inaugural class at the UMKC School of Medicine, and a 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Chicago Medical School.

Dr. Hellman has been involved with many state and local organizations, including the Missouri Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, the Diabetes Treatment Center and diabetes program at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, and Midwest Diabetes Care Center at Baptist Medical Center, the Missouri State Medical Association, Missouri Institute of Quality Health Care, Kansas City Missouri Health Commission, and Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. Dr. Hellman is recognized nationally and internationally as part of initiatives and workgroups focusing on quality improvement and measurement. He was a member of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement for 15 years, serving on their executive committee for 12 years, and rising to the position of vice chair from 2012 to 2015. He continues to be involved with several of their technical expert panels. He is a fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) and was on the board of directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) for 10 years, serving as president from 2007 to 2008. He has served as a member and chair of many ACE and AACE committees and task forces, including the legislative & regulatory committee, patient safety committee, and strategic planning committee. Dr. Hellman was the AACE Liaison to several organizations, including the FDA, American Board of Internal Medicine, and The Joint Commission. He has been a member of many task forces with the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Quality Forum, and National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Dr. Hellman pursued his education at New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, and earned a MD at the Chicago Medical School at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. Thereafter, he completed his internship at the University of Kansas, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine. As he looks to the future, Dr. Hellman intends to continue in private practice as a clinical endocrinologist, providing high quality care to his patients and those he sees in consultation, to continue his teaching and mentoring of young physicians and students, and also to continue his efforts to work with national organizations in efforts to improvement the quality of care for all.
