Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Hughes is a widely renowned photojournalist, author and journalism educator. Additionally, Mr. Hughes is a dedicated filmmaker with a focus on documentary work. His work was most recently recognized as the recipient of Best Documentary Short at the Houston Film Festival in 2017, Best Cultural Feature at the Hollywood International Independent Film Festival in 2016, and Best Documentary at the United Independent Film Festival in 2016.

As an educator, one of Mr. Hughes' most noted achievements was founding the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism program, as well as the department of journalism, at the University of Cincinnati, where he has served as a professor since the inception of his career. He is also recognized as a founder and former executive editor of the Cincinnati Reporter.

Prior to pursuing a career in journalism, Mr. Hughes attended Ball State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1967 and a Master of Arts in 1972. During this time, he served in the U.S. Army for two years. Since 1972, Mr. Hughes has served as a professor with the University of Cincinnati.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Hughes has worked as a photographer for a wide range of publications, including the Associated Press, The New York Times Company, The Sun, Los Angeles Times, Village Voice and Boulevard. Most recently, Mr. Hughes was credited for his photography in "The Intimate Realities of Water." His photography has appeared in national and international exhibitions, including appearances at the University of California, Indiana University, College of Mount Saint Joseph, The Taft Museum and Earlham College.

An established journalist, Mr. Hughes has been credited as a contributor to "Updike in Cincinnati," published in 2007. He has authored, edited, and contributed to a wide range of works, including, "Visions of Place," and "All Shook Up: Collected Poems about Elvis." In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in the field of journalism, Mr. Hughes maintains involvement with the National Press Photographers Association, Society of Professional Journalists and AAUP. He is recognized as the former president of Lafcadio Hearn Society USA and Radio Repertory Company, Inc. He has further been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in the Media and Communication and Who's Who in the Midwest.
