An accomplished listee, Dr. Stavely celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A former librarian who spent many years working in various Massachusetts public libraries, Dr. Stavely retired from the field in 2008 as an administrator with the Fall River Public Library. First attending Yale University where he obtained a Bachelor's degree and PhD, he began teaching English in 1969 at Boston University, Boston College, and The Ohio State University. Dr. Stavely also completed a Master of Library Science at Simmons College.

Now a well-known writer and scholar who has maintained a deep interest in the Puritan influence of American and English culture, Dr. Stavely has authored several books, including "The Politics of Milton's Prose Style" in 1975 and "Puritan Legacies: Paradise Lost and the New England Tradition" in 1987. With Alexander Humez, he co-authored "Family Man" in 1978. More recently, he co-authored three books about New England food history with his wife Kathleen Fitzgerald, a public librarian of 30 years and current director of the Willett Free Library in Rhode Island.

The first book, "America's Founding Food: The Story of New England Cooking," published in 2004, was followed by "Northern Hospitality: Cooking by the Book in New England" in 2011. In 2017, Dr. Stavely and his wife released the book "United Tastes: The Making of the First American Cookbook." Together, Dr. Stavely and his wife have spoken publicly at historical societies, libraries, museums, and international conferences, as well as in the local community and in various professional circles in their field of expertise.

A longtime member of Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Stavely was a Fulbright Foundation fellow from 1964 to 1965 in India. He also received a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies from 1988 to 1989, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1989. Additionally, Dr. Stavely is a recipient of an Independent Scholars Prize granted by the Modern Language Association in 1988.
