An American historian and bestselling author who specialized in English medieval social history, Dr. Hanawalt is now an emeritus faculty member and emeritus professor at The Ohio State University, and was appointed the King George III chair of British History in 1999. She later spent several years as the director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. She previously taught at Indiana University for 13 years, and taught at the University of Minnesota for 11 years, six of those years in which she also served as the director of medieval studies.

The author of the 1979 book "Crime and Conflict in Medieval England, 130-1948," Dr. Hanawalt also authored numerous other books, including "The Ties That Bound: Peasant Families in Medieval England" in 1986, "Growing Up in Medieval London" in 1993, "Of Good and Ill Repute: Gender and Social Control in Medieval England" in 1998, "Wealth of Wives: Law, Economy and Society in Late Medieval London" in 2007, and "Ceremony and Civility: Civil Culture in Late Medieval London" in 2017. She has contributed extensively to scholarly journals and collections of essays in her field of expertise, and has contributed to the western civilization textbook "The Western Experience" with several co-authors.

Dr. Hanawalt received a Bachelor's degree at Rutgers University in 1963, Master's degree at the University of Michigan in 1964, and PhD at the University of Michigan in 1970. She served as president of the Medieval Academy of America and the Social Science History Association, and is a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, The Royal Historical Society, and The Antiquarian Society of London. Furthermore, she is a member of the Medieval Academy of America and the Social Science History Association.

The recipient of numerous fellowships, including from the Newberry Library, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, Dr. Hanawalt has been featured in over a dozen issues of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women. In her down time, Dr. Hanawalt volunteers with Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, a local food bank.
