Serving more than 35 years in clinical and educational capacities, he has consistently distinguished himself as an innovative professional with the ability to positively influence those around him. Prior to earning his current position, Dr. Dillman was vice president of oncology for Caladrius Biosciences and the chief medical officer of California Stem Cell, Inc. He also served as executive medical director of the Hoag Institute for Research and Education, medical and scientific director of the Hoag Cancer Center, and director of oncology education for Hoag. Since 1989, he has been a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Irvine.

In addition to teaching and conducting research on cell therapy, Dr. Dillman has lent his expertise to several organizations. Since 2014, he has been a member of an independent data monitoring committee for Cold Genesys, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing novel cancer treatment technologies. He also previously served as chair of the data monitoring committee for Bayer AG, a member of the medical advisory board for Genentech, and a principal investigator for Caladrius Biosciences. A widely respected figure in his field, he has achieved international acclaim for his work in patient-specific cell therapies and treatment modalities for lymphoma, melanoma, and various types of cancer.

Dr. Dillman received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Stanford University, followed by an MD from the Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed an internship and residency in internal medicine. He later became a clinical fellow in hematology and oncology and a clinical research fellow in tumor immunology at the University of California, San Diego. He is licensed to practice medicine in California, and became a diplomate in medical oncology and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1981 and 1984, respectively. In order to remain alert of changes within his field, Dr. Dillman is affiliated with numerous professional circles, including the Institute for Clinical Immuno-Oncology, the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. From 1983 to 2016, he was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, as well as president of the International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer from 2000 to 2002.

Dr. Dillman has written more than 300 articles appearing in scholarly and professional journals and been the associate editor of Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals since 2008. He is also an editorial board member of the Journal of Immunotherapy and a former editorial board member of the American Journal of Oncology Review. His accomplishments and contributions to the field earned him recognition as a featured listee in Best Doctors in America from 1992 to 2015, as well as an Exceptional Service Award from the International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer and the Vin Jorgensen Award from the Hoag Hospital Foundation.
