Affiliated with The George Washington (GW) University Medical Faculty Associates in Washington, DC, Dr. Dyer is a trained psychiatrist and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. After completing his undergraduate degree and Master of Medical Science at Brown University, he completed an MD and PhD in Religion and Biomedical Ethics at Duke University, and has since become board certified in psychiatry and neurology. He is a licensed physician in North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, and D.C., and is affiliated with George Washington University Hospital.

Beginning his career in academia at Duke University after completing his residency and chief residency, Dr. Dyer taught psychiatry, served as assistant head of inpatient psychiatry, was a staff psychiatrist, and later became an associate clinical professor in the department of psychiatry and the department of community and family medicine from 1975 to 1987. He subsequently accepted a position at Albany Medical College in New York, where he spent another five years as professor, associate chairman and interim chairman. He taught at State University of New York, and later taught and chaired the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at East Tennessee State University.

Joining the GW Medical Faculty Associates in 2012, much of Dr. Dyer's expertise has been due to his involvement in global health and mental health. For the past 15 years, he has worked with Iraqi health professionals and the Minister of Health to develop education programs and policies. He has also worked in communities affected by disaster, including China, Haiti, Japan, and Greece. More recently, Dr. Dyer organized two humanitarian relief teams that responded to different phases of the refugee crisis in Greece, both of which included GW psychiatry residents and faculty as team members. His research has been documented in more than 100 professional journals and he has also contributed chapters to books and abstracts, has served on the advisory board, as a guest editor, and as a reviewer for several academic journals, and is the author of "Ethics and Psychiatry: Toward Professional Definition," published in 1988.

A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Dyer has received numerous fellowships and grants during his career, including the Kent Fellowship of the Danforth Foundation and the Institute of Human Values in Medicine Fellowship, received the Nancy Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education, and was recently selected by the American Psychiatric Association as the recipient of its Bruno Lima Award in Disaster Psychiatry in 2017. Married to Susan Kimball Athearn for nearly 50 years, they have two sons and six grandchildren.
