Dr. Sinha is currently studying the characteristics of prostate cancer stem cells and aggressiveness of prostate cancer, in addition to proliferation and cell death. He is employed at the University of Minnesota's college of biological sciences as an adjunct professor of genetics, cell biology, and development. He has been teaching at the university since 1981, and previously served as a senior scientist between 1967 and 1969. He is also affiliated with the university's Masonic Cancer Center, a comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute.
Founded in 1991, the Masonic Cancer Center is part of the university's academic health center and creates a collaborate research environment focused on the causes, prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer, applying such knowledge to improve quality of life for patients and survivors, and sharing its discoveries with other scientists, students, professionals, and the community. Dr. Sinha also holds a longtime appointment as a research scientist at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis since 1969.
Born in Churamanpur, Bihar, India, Dr. Sinha went on to earn a Bachelor's degree at Allahabad University in India in 1954, followed by a Master's degree at Patna University in India in 1956. He began as a lecturer at Ranchi University that same year, remaining in position until 1961 when he made his way to the United States. He completed his PhD four years later at the University of Missouri, and accepted his first teaching role in the states as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin before being accepted to teach at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Sinha has contributed articles to professional journals, including in the Journal of Andrology and Anticancer Research. Recently interviewed in a 2016 article published though his university called "Why Prostate Cancer Treatment Falls Short," by Deane Morrison, Dr. Sinha explains that "the problem is that some of the cancer cells are dependent on androgens (testosterone and other male hormones) and some cancer cells require estrogens." Dr. Sinha advocates new research to find means of shutting off the production of estrogens and the steroid molecules from which they are made. Nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Sinha and colleagues identified two kinds of basal cells in prostate tumors: androgen-dependent, which were killed by ADT, and androgen-independent, which tended to survive ADT. In the current study, they discovered that the androgen-independent cells were estrogen-dependent.
In 1972 and 1974, Dr. Sinha participated in National Science Foundation-funded Antarctic research expeditions. Little was then known about shoreline animal populations. Dr. Sinha worked side-by-side with a team of renowned scientists to catalog native seal, whale, and bird species along nearly 100,000 nautical square miles of Antarctic coast. The U.S. Geological Survey honored him for his 1972 biological research expedition, which provided critical data about animal populations.
Dr. Sinha is married to Dorothy K. Pamer. He loves cross-country skiing, traveling, reading, and photography, and Mount Sinha in Antarctica was named after him. Additionally, he has been recognized in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World nearly a dozen times.
