Margo Friedel Aller, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Aller has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of astronomy

ANN ARBOR, MI, December 18, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Margo Friedel Aller, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Aller celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A research scientist in the department of astronomy at the University of Michigan (UM), Dr. Aller first began her career at the university as a teaching fellow in 1962. Progressing into the role of research assistant, research associate, associate research scientist, and lecturer in the department of astronomy, she is currently studying relativistic jet outflows from gas accretion onto massive black holes in active galactic nuclei. This research uses a combination of observations from the U-M 26-meter radio telescope (UMRAO), MOJAVE (a VLBA key program dedicated to characterizing the kinematics of these sources), complementary broadband data obtained as part of a global collaboration, and theoretical modeling. Particularly interested in the geometry of magnetic fields within jets, as well as their particle composition, Dr. Aller has also been studying the relationship between radio band flares and activity at shorter wavelengths.

Dr. Aller's research has helped identify shocks as the probable origin of radio band variability. Recently a part of a team that obtained the first observational evidence for the presence of an acceleration and collimation zone within the jet, confirming the predictions of jet-launching models, she also maintains interest in research regarding the relation between accretion disks and jet outflows using a combination of simultaneous radio band and X-ray observations of the radio galaxies 3C 120, 3C 111, and NGC 1052.

First earning her undergraduate work at Vassar College in 1960, Dr. Aller then completed postgraduate work at Harvard University from 1961 to 1962, and her Master's degree and PhD at the University of Michigan in 1964 and 1969, respectively. She subsequently began working as a mathematician programmer for the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and as a research assistant for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the early 1960s before accepting her first appointment at UM.

Briefly serving as a member of the users' committee for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory from 1984 to 1986, Dr. Aller is a longtime member of Sigma Xi, the American Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union, and the International Union of Radio Science. Married to Hugh Duncan Aller since 1964, she has been cited in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who of American Women.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Margo Friedel Aller, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
