Daniel Malamud, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Professor of Basic Sciences & Craniofacial Biology at New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at NYU School of Medicine, and director of HIV/AIDS Research Program (HARP) in the NYU College of Dentistry, Dr. Malamud joined the NYU faculty in 2005. He had previously spent 20 years at the University of Pennsylvania, beginning in 1985 as a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and later as the chair of the department. He was an Assistant Professor of Pathology in the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital from 1969 to 1977, and was a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Renato Baserga from 1966-68 and an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Temple University from 1968 -1969.

Early in his career, Dr. Malamud served as a visiting Associate Professor and Fulbright lecturer at the University of the Philippines in Manila in 1975. He has since served as an exchange scientist at Hebrew University and visiting scientist at Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Malamud's research projects have been focused on three major areas: the development of microfluidic point-of-care diagnostic tests for HIV, TB, Malaria, and Zika utilizing blood and saliva samples; the role of DMBT1 (aka gp340, SAG) novel anti-HIV molecule binding to a conserved site on the HIV gp120 glycoprotein. He also identified plasma and salivary biomarkers for medical conditions, including HIV, chronic depression, and pain.

Honored with a Research Career Development Award from 1972 to 1977, Dr. Malamud has also been recognized numerous times for his teaching ability. He was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Senior Lecturer in 1975, a Basic Science Teaching Award in 1988, a Lindback Teaching Award in 1992, and a NYSTAR Distinguished Professor Award for 2005 to 2008.

Dr. Malamud received a BS in Biology at the University of Michigan in 1961, Master's degree at Western Michigan University in 1962, and a PhD in Cell Biology at the University of Cincinnati in 1965. He also received an honorary Master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983.

During his career, Dr. Malamud authored and co-authored 160 articles and several chapters to books in his field. He is the author along with Dr. Baserga of "Autoradiography" in 1969, "Saliva as a Diagnostic Fluid" in 1993, and "Oral-Based Diagnostics" in 2007. A longtime member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Society of Biochemical Molecular Biology, the American Society of Microbiologists, the American Society of Cell Biologists, and the American Society of Biological Chemists, Dr. Malamud has been married since 1961 to Judith Disner, with whom he has two children and four grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys performing stand-up comedy and improv.
