Retired musician and professor emeritus at his alma mater, the Aaron Copland School of Music at the City University of New York (CUNY), Dr. Brings was coordinator of the theory and ear training program during his tenure, beginning in 1963. He has also recorded for Capstone, Centaur, Grenadilla, Contemporary Record Society, North/South Consonance, Arizona University Recordings, and Vienna Modern Masters, and he has performed extensively in the United States and abroad, particularly in programs of music for piano, four-hands, with Genevieve Chinn, which he recorded for Orion, CRI, and Centaur. Furthermore, Dr. Brings is the co-author of "A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony," which was published throughout W.W. Norton, and he has written and published extensively in various publications such as the "College of Music Symposium," "Contemporary Music Newsletter," and "New Music Connoisseur."

Dr. Brings has served as chairman of the eastern region of the American Society of University Composers twice. He has also spent time as vice-president of Connecticut Composers and is a member of the Catholic Commission on Intellectual and Cultural Affairs. Prior to earning his degrees, Dr. Brings spent two years serving the military in the U.S. Army, from 1957 to 1959.
