A retired pilot and educator, Mr. Grubbs founded Forrest Fotos, a company focused on photographing competitive sports, night scenes, and special events in 2016 and has provided pro bono services for Spokane Basketball Officials, for women's basketball at North Idaho College and for women's soccer at North Idaho College, College of Idaho, and Northwest Nazarene University. He recently held the roles of Director/Teacher at Lakeside Academy of Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls, Washington. From 2006 to 2010, he was the Regional Trainer of Mathematics Collection of Evidence for Educational Service District 101 and was the Coordinator of the Northwest International Education Association from 1992 to 1995. Additionally, he served as Director/Teacher at the Phoenix Alternative School in Nine Mile Falls from 1997 to 2012.
Prior to his career in education, Mr. Grubbs served with the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1991 with responsibilities as a pilot, air traffic controller, and staff officer, including the Headquarters United States Air Force in Europe Battle Staff from 1984 to 1987. From 1983 to 1984, he was the Air Force Officer Representative to the New England Airspace Review Committee of the Federal Aviation Administration. Other positions he held over the last few decades include School Director of the Nine Mile Falls School District where he served as President and Legislative Representative, Academic Advisor and Summer Residency Counselor for the Washington Aerospace Scholars at Seattle Museum of Flight, national championship umpire for the Amateur Softball Association, state high school championship umpire for the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association, and cross-country, basketball, and softball coach at Lakeside High School.
Mr. Grubbs has also served as a member of the Scholarship Committee of the Washington Association of Learning Alternatives from 2007 to 2012, as Small School District Representative on the Spokane County School Directors Association in the early '90s, and as a member of the (Spokane) Japan Week Committee in 1994. Mr. Grubbs has served his community in a wide variety of capacities, some of which include acting as a volunteer at local clean-up projects, an adult literacy program, Special Olympics, and Midnight Basketball. In addition, he regularly contributes to charitable and service organizations: Goodwill, Salvation Army, Wounded Warrior Project, Union Gospel Mission, Second Harvest Food Bank, Special Olympics, and Spokane Public Radio. Furthermore, he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons of Faith Baptist Church, Einsiedlerhof, Germany and as a Bible study teacher for various Baptist and nondenominational churches from 1974 to 2007. Mr. Grubbs has also been a volunteer official for the Washington Special Olympics since 2006 and participated in high-angle search and rescue with Eugene Mountain Rescue from 1969 to 1971.
Mr. Grubbs holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Oregon and a teaching certificate from Gonzaga University; additionally, he earned graduate credit from Troy State University European Region, Whitworth College, and the University of Wisconsin. He was certified to teach in Washington State by the Office Superintendent of Public Education in 1977 and was also certified in First Aid and CPR. Mr. Grubbs is also a certified pilot; the Federal Aviation Administration certified him as a commercial helicopter pilot in 1972, as a fixed-wing commercial pilot in 1978, and as a Control Tower Operator in 1982. The United States Air Force awarded his pilot wings in 1972 and his air traffic control badge in 1982. He has contributed to Federal Aviation Administration, United States Air Force, United States Department of Defense, and International Civil Aviation Organization, air traffic control regulations and other publications, and in preparation for Desert Storm/Desert Shield, US Central Command called Fairchild Air Force Base to request his B-52 flight plans specifically.
Mr. Grubbs has been a member of the Air Force Association, US Concealed Carry Association, National Association of Sports Officials, Spokane Softball Umpires Association, Spokane Basketball Officials, the Washington Officials Association, the Washington Association of Learning Alternatives, National Education Association, and the Nine Mile Education Association.
Mr. Grubbs has been honored with multiple awards and commendations for his services to his country and community. The United States Air Force decorated Mr. Grubbs with the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Air Force Small Arms Expert Marksman Ribbon. He was also the recipient of the Winged-S Award by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation from 1974 to 1977 for flying 19 search and rescue missions resulting in 13 saves and 21 assists, the Distinguished Graduate Award by the United States Air Force Officer Training School in 1972, the Outstanding in Flight Award by the United States Army Primary Helicopter School in 1972, Honor Graduate at the Air Traffic Control Officer Course by Air Training Command in 1982, the Silver Scribe Award by the Tactical Communications Division in 1983, Honor Graduate at the Air Traffic Control Staff Officer Course by Air Training Command in 1984, and the Honor Award by the Air Traffic Control Association in 1984. Moreover, he received numerous commendations from senior officers for his performance during critical and high-visibility tasks and missions. His community service commendations include the Sportsmanship Medallion at the Washington State 2A Fastpitch Tournament in 2001, the Leadership Circle Award by the Washington State School Directors Association from 1993 to 1995, a Program Mini-Grant by the Educational Service District 101 in 1999, and the President's Call to Service Award in 2010.
Mr. Grubbs is the son of William Eugene and Phyllis Anne Grubbs. He has been married to Brenda Sue Wetzel since April 6, 1974. Together, they have three children: Crystal Darlene Cox, Caryn Danelle Carter, and Coral Alayne Van Dyne. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, camping, photography, and writing.
