Mr. Hill gained his early financial planning expertise as the principal of Hill Financial Advisors, a registered investment advisor and financial services firm he formed in 1983. From prior sales and management positions with financial services companies, he came to believe the industry was broken, with conflicts of interest unfair to those they claimed to help. That experience led Mr. Hill to earn several pioneering professional designations such as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP ) and Chartered Financial Consultant in 1983, and then later Accredited Tax Advisor as well as others. Certified Financial Planner licensees and investment advisors registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission have a fiduciary duty to act exclusively in their clients' best interest.

Mr. Hill earned a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in English at the University of Rochester in 1974, and a Master of Business Administration in Finance at William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration also at the University of Rochester in 1989. Professional education includes a Master of Science in Financial Services at American College in 1988, and a Master of Science in Financial Planning from the College of Financial Planning, at of the University of Phoenix in 1997. Mr. Hill was introduced to economic science and financial research as an MBA student that changed his understanding of how markets work, leading eventually to an affiliation with Dimensional Fund Advisors, a global leader in multifactor investing and its consulting group of Nobel laurates.

Mr. Hill is co-author with Scott Keffer of Retire Abundantly and Giving Changes You. He and his firm have been written about in magazines and other publications, including Forbes, Money, Fortune, where he explains the importance of advisor independence, client discipline, and the value of a management process based on financial science that strategically integrates complete retirement planning. Mr. Hill has been interviewed variously by James Malinchak featured on ABC TV's hit series, Secret Millionaire, and by Dimensional Fund Advisors for its "Value of an Advisor" series. He has taught as adjunct faculty member of the College for Financial Planning at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY. Mr. Hill lives with his wife, Kam-Lin "Katherine" Hill in Pittsford, NY. He has consulted and supported The Partnership Foundation since 2012, and through them provides scholarships for disadvantaged tribal children and orphans, and finance construction of high schools in remote northeastern India.
