Manchang Gui Recognized for Achievements in Engineering

AJAX, ON, January 11, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Manchang Gui has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Manchang Gui, licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario Canada, has worked as metallurgical and special process engineer and project manager with Safran Landing Systems Canada Inc., a world leader in the design, manufacture and repair & overhaul of landing gear and brake systems, since 2007. Earlier in his career, he served as research scientist with Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials (BIAM), one of the largest research and development center of advanced aeronautical materials and processes in China. He has also worked in a variety of national and international roles, including as a researcher with Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials in South Korea, and a metallurgical engineer with Material & Special Process Laboratory at Orenda Aerospace Corp. in Canada.

Dr. Gui earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 at the Anhui Polytechnic University, Wuhu, China. He received his MS in 1991 and Ph.D in 1994 both in Material Science and Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China. After receiving his Ph.D, he took a position as postdoctoral fellow at BIAM until 1995.

Dr. Gui began his profession at Anqing Machinery Inc. as a junior engineer to technically support foundry shop production after he finished his BS. In his career at R&D institutes, he focused on R&D work on advanced metal materials and processes. He was in charge of and participated in some national high-tech research projects. His R&D expertise and activities included metal matrix composites, advanced aluminum alloys, metal foam material, metal wear and erosion, and advanced casting process. With his team at BIAM, he developed an innovational method, vacuum liquid and semi-solid bi-stirring process, to produce SiC particle reinforced cast aluminum matrix composite in an industrial scale; and developed an advanced process, vacuum investment casting process, to produce aluminum matrix composite castings served in aerospace. At Safran Landing Systems Canada Inc., as key technical personnel in special process in the Manufacturing Engineering Department, he technically supported HVOF thermal spraying and shot peening process in manufacturing operation. Especially in the past decade, he has been dedicated to develop and use HVOF thermal spray technology to produce WC-Co coating, as a replacement of traditional electrolytic hard chrome plating, on landing gear application for a variety of components. He also studied cracking and spalling behavior of the HVOF coating in bend and fatigue tests, and developed a theory to discover coating spalling mechanism during fatigue test, which was published in J. Mater. Eng. Perform. in 2015. In addition, as a project manager or participator, he undertook a variety of projects in the company, including new machine establishment and advanced process development.

In recognition of his commitment to the engineering industry, he has been the recipient of several awards throughout his career, including an Innovation Award from Safran Landing Systems Canada Inc. in 2015 for HVOF coating honing technology. He received a Science and Technology Development Award from the Chinese Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense in 2001, a Science and Technology Development Award from the Aeronautical Industry Cooperation of China in 2000, and a Natural Science Award from Chinese Higher Education Commission in 2000. He has obtained three patents nationally and internationally. He has been published more than 50 articles in professional journals, such as Scripta Materialia; Metall. Mater. Trans. A and J. Thermal Spray Technology, and conferences pertaining to his areas of expertise.
