In 1964, Dr. Holtzman graduated from Harvard University with a BA. He continued his studies at Columbia University, receiving a MD in 1969. Following his graduation, Dr. Holtzman became a rotating intern at Harlem Hospital Center until 1970. Between 1970 and 1972, he was a resident in neurology at the Neurological Institute of New York. Dr. Holtzman worked as a resident in general surgery at Harbor UCLA Medical Center from 1972 to 1973. He was then a resident in neurosurgery at the Neurological Institute of New York with Columbia University from 1973 to 1977.

Throughout his career, Dr. Holtzman was an attending neurosurgeon at various esteemed scientific institutions such as Mercy Medical Center, South Nassau Communities Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and NYU Winthrop Hospital. Dr. Holtzman was also the chairman of the New York chapter for Jackson Laboratory National Council. From 1983 to 1991, he co-founded the Stonwin Medical Conference. During this period, he also worked as the co-director of this organization.

Between 1986 and 2010, Dr. Holtzman was the attending surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital. His career as an educator includes his work as an associate clinical professor in neurosurgery at Columbia University from 1996 to 2010. Dr. Holtzman was an attending neurosurgeon at Harlem Hospital Center between 1979 and 2010, and for Lincoln Hospital between 2002 and 2012. Since 2011, he has worked as an attending neurosurgeon at Neurological Surgery P.C.

As an author, Dr. Holtzman has published "Endovascular Interventional Neuroradiology" in 1995. He was the editor for "The Tethered Spinal Cord" in 1985, "Surgery of the Diencephalon" in 1989, "Surgery of the Spinal Cord: The Potential for Regeneration and Recovery" in 1991, and "Spinal Instability" in 1993. In 1985, Dr. Holtzman was the contributor for "The Tethered Spinal Cord," as well as articles to various medical journals.

As an esteemed neurosurgeon, Dr. Holtzman is a member of various medical organizations, including the New York Society for Neurosurgery, New York State Neurosurgical Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, The Medical Society of the State of New York, and Nassau County Medical Society. Dr. Holtzman was a diplomate of American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. and American Board of Neurological Surgery, as well.
