Dr. Dinah Parums, MD, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A medically qualified freelance copywriter, editor, medical journalist, and publisher, Dr. Dinah Parums has a background in diagnostic medicine, research, publishing, teaching, translational research for the pharmaceutical industry, and peer reviewing, writing, and editing for several biomedical journals. She attended grammar school in Derbyshire, England and won an Entrance Scholarship to King's College, Cambridge to study for a BA in Medical Sciences. Dinah then attended Oxford University Medical School where she was awarded Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine degrees. Dr. Dinah Parums has an MA from the University of Cambridge. Supported by a Junior Research Fellowship from the British Heart Foundation and a Research Fellowship from Darwin College, Cambridge, she obtained her PhD in Experimental Pathology at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Dinah Parums completed her higher specialist training/residency in Pathology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where she was also a Clinical Lecturer and Clinical Tutor, Oxford University Medical School, Research Fellow of Wolfson College, and College Lecturer at Balliol College, Oxford. Dr. Dinah Parums was awarded the MRCPath in 1991 and the FRCPath in 1999 and was an External Examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists from 1994.

Dr. Dinah Parums has edited and co-written a postgraduate medical education book: Parums, D.V. (Editor). "Essential Clinical Pathology." Blackwell Science Ltd. Oxford. 1996. ISBN 0-632-03088-7. This 700-page book contains 500 full-color figures, representing a complete clinical pathology (laboratory medicine) 'core' course textbook for medical students. The content is based on the Editor's teaching experience in running the Oxford clinical pathology teaching over three years. One-third of the book is written by the Editor, with contributions in Haematology, Biochemistry, Immunology, and Microbiology from 14 other authors.

Dinah has held Visiting Fellowships in Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford University Medical School in the USA. In support of these research studies, Dinah was awarded a Scholarship from the British Federation of University Women, the George Herbert Hunt Travelling Scholarship, University of Oxford, and the Travel Fund Award, from the Association of Clinical Pathologists. In 1999, she was elected to the Fellowship of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

Dr. Dinah Parums has worked as a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in the U.K. health service, and as a medical manager, and has supervised and examined several PhD students. She was a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College, London, where she trained junior doctors and research clinicians from around the world.

Dinah has an interest in translational science and the application of research on human disease to the development of targeted therapy in cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and oncology. In this capacity, she has been an external research consultant for Pfizer Global R&D and was as a Principal Pharmaceutical Physician with AstraZeneca (U.K. and Sweden), where she was part of a Phase 3 oncology clinical trials team and published clinical trial reports and biomarker analysis data.

Dr. Dinah Parums has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications, has evaluated several invited oncology reviews, and has more than 25 years of experience of peer reviewing manuscripts for biomedical journal publication. She continues to review manuscripts for scientific and medical journals, and is currently on the Editorial Board of "Medical Science Monitor." Currently, Dr. Parums is also a member of The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP), the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), and the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA), and is a member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and is a member of the Royal Horticulture Society. She currently writes about gardening on her gardening blog, "The Small English Garden."

During her medical training, clinical practice, research, and teaching career, Dr. Dinah Parums has received several honors and awards, including the H.E. Durham Fund Award, King's College, Cambridge (1980); the Alfred A. Richman Research Award, American College of Chest Physicians (1982); the Radcliffe Prize, Oxford University Medical School (1983); the George Pickering Prize, Oxford University Medical School (1983). As such, Dr. Parums is included in Who's Who in the World in honor of her work.
