Thomas E. Moore Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    ANN ARBOR, MI, January 23, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Thomas E. Moore, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Moore celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. With more than 60 years of professional experience in biology and academia, Dr. Moore has been an emeritus professor of biology at the University of Michigan since 2000. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor of biology with the school from 1966 to 2000. He also concurrently served as a curator of insects in the Museum of Zoology from 1956 to 2000, and as director of the Museum of Natural History, with its public exhibits, from 1988 to 1993. He joined the zoology department as an instructor from 1956 to 1959, as an assistant professor from 1959 to 1963, and as an associate professor from 1963 to 1966.

Dr. Moore began his career as a student of the University of Illinois, earning a BS in 1951, an MS in 1952, and a PhD in 1956. While pursuing his doctorate degree, he also served as a technical assistant with the Illinois Natural History Survey on the campus from 1950 to 1956. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1965, a fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 1994, and of the Royal Entomological Society in 1992. He served several years on the executive committee of the local chapter of Sigma Xi (The Research Society), and of the University Chapter and the Michigan Conference of the American Association of University Professors, and as chair of the university's Tropical Studies Committee. He has served as a county representative to the Huron River Watershed Council in Ann Arbor, MI.

Dr. Moore contributed greatly to the university during his long tenure there. He served on the university-wide faculty grievance committee, faculty grievance appeals committee, tenure committee, student judiciary appeals committee, and the faculty handbook committee. He also served several terms on the senate assembly, and was vice chair of the senate advisory committee on university affairs. He has been a member of the university safety and police oversight committee, on advisory boards for the president and several of the vice presidents of the university, and was a member of the state-wide high school accreditation committee at the university. He has also served on the executive committees of the university's Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Biological Station. He was a mentor and executive committee member with Prof. B.J. Evans' Program in Scholarly Research for inner-city Detroit high school students, and regularly gave programs in area elementary, middle, and high schools. Prof. Moore was on the U.S. International Biological Program Tropical Biome and Desert Scrub steering committees, and on the board of directors of the Organization for Tropical Studies for several years, twice a visiting professor there, and on the negotiating committee for all of their field stations in Costa Rica. He is also a former 3-term president of the international Association of Tropical Biology and Conservation.

Dr. Moore has written extensively in the fields of biology and zoology. He co-authored "Singing Insects of North America Website," published in 2014, he was the co-editor of "Cricket Behavior and Neurobiology" in 1989, and has been a technical editor of several other books and television programs. He has served on the National Science Foundation's panel on graduate fellowships and on the National Research Council's panel on postdoctoral research associateships at the Agriculture Department. He has secured research grants through the National Science Foundation, the Soros Foundation, the Bache Fund of the National Academy of Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology, General Motors Proving Grounds, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency/Office of Naval Research, and a special project grant from LAMBAC in 2010 for work in Ontario Parks, Canada. Dr. Moore has hosted or co-hosted cooperative projects with colleagues from New Zealand, Slovenia, Russia, Canada, and Germany. He spent 8 years in cooperative research on singing insects with colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology, often in Germany as well as in the U.S. He is a Distinguished Faculty Governance Award recipient from the University of Michigan. He was married to the late E. Eleanor Sifferd and has two daughters. He has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1994, many editions of Who's Who in the Midwest, as well as several editions of Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

In retirement, Dr. Moore continues to live on a small family-operated specialty horse farm which is now part of the greenbelt around Ann Arbor, MI. He maintains activity on boards of two 501(c)(3) organizations: as treasurer of the Academic Freedom Lecture Fund on the university campus, and the Kempf House Museum in Ann Arbor, MI. He is also a volunteer and former board member at the Friends of Misery Bay Ontario Provincial Park, Canada, and a volunteer Lake Huron water sampler for the Ontario Lake Partner Program, near his Manitoulin Island summer home. He continues to research and publish on the biology of insects, particularly on periodical cicadas.
