Employed in the virus laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley from 1954 to 1976, and later at the Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory of the California Department of Public Health thereafter, some of her greatest achievements have included identifying a new species of free living ameba, which has been named Naegleria dunnebackei out of respect for her research conducted in protozoology.
Dr. Dunnebacke's research throughout the years has been funded through various grants by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Very fortune to have been able to work in a field that was considered to be predominantly upheld by men during that time, she maintained memberships with numerous relative organizations to not only remain alert of changes in her field, but to also remain competitive. These organizations have included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Cell Biology, the Society of Protozoologists, the Society of Tissue Culture, and the Electron Microscope Society. Recognized for her work many times, Dr. Dunnebacke has been highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who of American Women multiple times.
Born in Nashville, TN, in 1925, Dr. Dunnebacke later earned her undergraduate degree in 1947, Master's degree in 1949, and PhD in 1954, all at Washington University. In 1954, she also married her husband Jonathan S. Dixon and later had three children, James Dunnebacke, Lindsay Ann, and Frederick Charles, all while raising her family and upholding her career, of which her family has always been very supportive. When Dr. Dunnebacke isn't busy working in her lab, she enjoys doing hand crafts, painting, doing photography, and working in her garden.
