John R. Varsik, PhD, Recognized for Achievements in Astronomy

Dr. Varsik helped write the software to control the Goode Solar Telescope, the largest solar telescope in the world



A widely regarded voice in the field of astronomy, Dr. Varsik serves as a data scientist with the Big Bear Solar Observatory.

    BIG BEAR CITY, CA, January 29, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John R. Varsik, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A widely regarded voice in the field of astronomy, Dr. Varsik serves as a data scientist with the Big Bear Solar Observatory. Operating through the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the observatory is currently tasked with housing the largest solar telescope in the world. Named after Philip R. Goode, the Goode Solar Telescope was built from 2006 to 2009. One of the greatest highlights of Dr. Varsik's career was helping to build the software to control the Goode Solar Telescope.

Since the inception of his career, Dr. Varsik has contributed 34 articles on solar and stellar astronomy and solar instrument development. He was most recently credited as a co-author of "Control and Operation of the 1.6m New Solar Telescope in Big Bear," "Nasmyth Focus Instrumentation of the New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory," and "The Thermal Environment of the Fiber Glass Dome for the New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory." In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in his fields of expertise, Dr. Varsik maintains involvement with the American Astronomical Society, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, American Geophysical Union and SPIE.

Prior to pursuing a career in astronomy, Dr. Varsik received a Bachelor of Science in physics from Stanford University. He went on to attend the University of Hawaii, where he received a Master of Science in 1981, and PhD in astronomy in 1987. While completing formal education, Dr. Varsik served as a graduate teaching assistant with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and graduate research assistant with the Institute of Astronomy.

Early in his career, Dr. Varsik served as a solar observer and assistant scientist with the Big Bear Solar Observatory. He was briefly recognized as a research associate with the National Solar Observatory before returning to the Big Bear Solar Observatory in 1997. Since then, he has held a variety of roles with the observatory, including as an assistant research professor, associate research professor, research professor, data scientist and solar observer. As Dr. Varsik moves forward in his career, he looks forward to his continued involvement with the Goode Solar Telescope.
