With more than 55 years of scientific experience, Dr. Verebey was the director of toxicology for Ammon Analytical Laboratory from 1999-2003, the president and director for LeadTech Corp. from 1992 to 2001, senior legal consultant in forensic toxicology, pharmacology and behavior for the Biobehavioral Research Foundation Inc. from 1981 to 1998, director of toxicology for the Institute for Basic Research from 1992 to 1995, chief toxicologist for the Department of Health with the city of New York, NY, from 1989 to 1992, and clinical laboratory director for the Psychiatric Diagnostic Laboratory of America from 1982 to 1989. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Verebey worked as the director of clinical pharmacology for the New York State Division of the Substance Abuse Services Testing and Research Laboratory from 1973 to 1988, as research associate in pharmacology with Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University from 1972 to 1973, previously as a research associate for the department of neurology with Cornell University Medical College from 1963 to 1968, and as a clinical laboratory specialist with the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1961 to 1963.
Dr. Verebey began his career by pursuing an education at Eotvos Jozsef Secondary School, earning an Associate of Arts in humanities in 1956. He followed this with a Bachelor of Art in physiology in 1965 from Hunter College. In 1968, he continued his studies at CUNY, receiving a Master of Arts in molecular biology. Dr. Verebey concluded his academic efforts with Weill Cornell Medicine Graduate School of Medical Sciences, graduating in 1972 with a PhD in biochemistry and a PhD in pharmacology.
A diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, Dr. Verebey is a licensed director in several fields within the state of New York, including in hematology, clinical chemistry, blood PH and gas, endocrinology, blood lead, forensic toxicology, and erythrocyte protoporphirin. He is also a former inspector with the National Laboratory Certification Program for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the College of American Pathologists. Certified as a clinical laboratory director by the American Board of Bioanalysis, Dr. Verebey is licensed as a clinical laboratory director for the Department of Health for both New York and New Jersey.
In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Verebey has held a number of other positions. Since 1978, he has served as the associate professor of psychiatry for the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He has also worked as a research professor of psychiatry for the New York Medical College from 1981 to 1990, as the assistant director for the Division of Substance Abuse Services at the Testing and Research Laboratory in Brooklyn, NY, from 1984 to 1988, previously as supervisor for the New York Infirmary from 1968 to 1975, and as supervisor for St. Mary's Hospital from 1968 to 1975. Additionally, Dr. Verebey was a laboratory technologist for St. Mary's Hospital from 1968 to 1975, the New York Infirmary from 1968 to 1975, Cornell University Medical College from 1963 to 1968, and the Presbyterian Hospital in Columbia, SC, from 1962 to 1963.
An expert in the field, Dr. Verebey is affiliated with various professional organizations. He is a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, Inc., and TIAFT (The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists). Additionally, he was involved on the Executive Committee of the Drug Abuse Advisory Board for the New York State Department of Health as well as the Editorial Board for Advances in Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Dr. Verebey has found additional success as a contributor to professional journals (he published over 100 scientific publications in national and international journals) and a lecturer in scientific meetings. He organized and edited the 1981 International Conference "Opioids in Mental Illness: Clinical Observations, and Treatment Possibilities" published in "Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, vol 398 1982 and published "Endorphins in Psychiatry" in the Archives of General Psychology, vol 35, 877, 1978.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Verebey has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. A fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, he previously completed a research fellowship with the U.S. Public Health Service from 1968 to 1973, a predoctoral fellowship with the Department of Pharmacology at Cornell University Medical College, College of Medical Sciences from 1968 to 1972, and a postdoctoral neurology fellowship for Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University Medical College from 1972 to 1973. He has also received grants from the Narcotic and Drug Research Inc. from 1974 to 1976, 1979 to 1981, and in 1985, as well as from Cornell University Medical College from 1974 to 1977. He was also named the Water Polo National Champion with the New York Athletic Club from 1959 to 1961 and played water polo for the USA National Team in the 1961 Maccabi Games.
Elected to the Hunter College Hall of Fame at CUNY in 1989, he received the Abraham Lincoln Award from the American Hungarian Foundation in 2013. He has been listed in the National Faculty Directory by SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1986 and 1996. A USA Patent No. 5,358720 was issued on October 25, 1994 to Dr. Verebey, the "Treatment of Arthritic Conditions." The idea was later marketed as "Verebey Joint Support" by the Ludman Fit Corporation.
He has been honored among the American Men and Women of Science in 1986, 1997, and 1998. Cementing his legacy as a leader in his industry, Dr. Verebey has been selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
