Professor Giancarlo Ghirardi Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Full Professor of Theoretical Physics for about 50 years as well as currently a consultant and Member of the Academic Board of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Professor Ghirardi previously served as director of the Department of Theoretical Physics (1993-1999, 1984-1990), and of the Institute of Theoretical Physics (1980-1984) of the Trieste University, assistant professor and associate professor at the University of Parma and Pavia (1963-1975), and associate professor at the University of Milano (1961-1963). He also has been a Fellow in Theoretical Physics at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics since 1960. At the time of his retirement he has been named Professor Emeritus of the Trieste University.

His major achievements include his research into Scattering Theory, research on the conceptual foundations of the quantum decay law of an unstable system, research on the so-called Zeno's effect of quantum mechanics, research on the peaceful coexistence of quantum mechanics and relativity, argument against superluminal transmission through the quantum mechanical measurement process, research on the No-Cloning Theorem, and research on the so-called GRW Theory.

Professor Ghirardi has been a member of Council Administration and the Academy Board as well as President of the Consortium for Physics at the University of Trieste. He is a former member of the standing committee of the International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics (1982-1996); and the Directory Committee at Gramsci Institute in Trieste, Italy (1980-1990). He was a visiting professor at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio (1970) and the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (1972). He has lectured at various universities all around the world. Professor Ghirardi is affiliated as Membre Titulaire of the International Academy of Philosophie Scis., Bruxelles, has been a member of the directory committee of the Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science, member of the Italian Physical Society, The New York Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of The Third World Academy of Sciences and has been President of the Italian Society for the Foundations of Physics. He has 9250 citations from 1989 to the present.

He received a prize from the Italian Physical Society in 1960, received the Primo Rovis Prize for Science Popularization in 2000, was recognized as a Member of Excellence by the Italian Physics Society in 2013, was honored in 2016 with the Medal of the Province of Trieste for Important Scientific Contributions and was awarded the Spirit of Salam Prize in 2017.

Professor Ghirardi is the author of "The Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber Solution of the Quantum Measurement Problem" a paper which is universally recognized for having opened a new line for overcoming the difficulties of the quantum measurement problem, and of the book "Un Occhiata alle Carte di Dio" (1997), "Translation: Sneaking a Look at God's Cards: Unraveling the Mysteries of Quantum Mechanics" (2003), and co-author of "Symmetry Principles in Quantum Theory" (1970). He served as an editor of "Chance in Physics" (2001), "Bridging the Gap: Philosophy and Physics" (1993), "Science in Europe" (1988) and "Group Theoretical Methods in Physics" (1985). Professor Ghirardi was a member of the editorial boards of Foundations of Physics(1970-2008) and Quantum mechanics and quantum information editor of the European Journal of Physics A: General Physics (1995-2001). He has been invited to write a review: "Collapse Theories" on the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Included in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World more than a dozen times, Professor Ghirardi earned a Diploma from Scientific Lyceum in 1954 and a Degree in Physics, summa cum laude, at the University of Milan in 1959. He is married to Laura Cottini, with whom he has three daughters, Monica, Barbara and Lucia. He loves to listen to and play music and enjoys graphics and photography.
