Dr. Paul E. Rosene Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With over 65 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Rosene has worked as a music consultant on Handbells and Choirchimes with Malmark, Inc. since 1990. Prior to this appointment, he held the positions of music education professor and student music teacher supervisor with Illinois State University from 1967 to 1990, music supervisor and director of high school bands with the Pittsfield Public Schools from 1957 to 1967, and director of instrumental music for Avon Public Schools from 1955 to 1957. Enlisting with the U.S. Air Force in 1953, he served as band school instructor from 1953 to 1954, French horn bandsman from 1954 to 1955, director of the Men's Glee Club from 1954, and staff sergeant until his honorable discharge in 1955. Dr. Rosene began his career as director of music education at the Saybrook Public School from 1951 to 1952, and supervisor of music and band director for Chenoa Public Schools from 1952 to 1953.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Rosene pursued an education at Illinois State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in music education in 1951. He continued his studies at Illinois State University in 1957, receiving a Master of Education in psychology and music. He concluded his academic efforts in 1976, graduating from the University of Illinois with a Doctor of Music Education. Dr. Rosene followed these accomplishments with certifications as a Master Teacher and Supervisor of Student Teaching in Music in Illinois, as well as a Master Teacher with the Music Educators National Conference.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Rosene has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A frequent volunteer at Saint Luke's Lutheran Church, he served as personnel director for The School Band and Chorus of America from 1967 to 1979, director and founder of the Handbells/Choirchimes Ensembles at the Illinois State University from 1974 to 1990, director of the Central Illinois Community Band from 1979 to 1990, and director of Handbells at Bethany Lutheran Church from 1990 to 2006. He has found much success as an author, having written "Making Music with Handbells/Choirchimes" in 1982, "Making Music with Choirchimes Instruments - Advanced Method" in 1986, "Special Effects for Choirchimes" in 2003, and "Special Effects for Hand Chimes" in 2010. Dr. Rosene also worked as an editor for the Great Lakes Newsletter from 1967 to 1990, and composer for Pontifest in 1988.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Rosene remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. Member of both Florida and Illinois Music Educators Associations, he previously maintained involvement as president of the Pittsfield Teachers Association from 1960 to 1967, as well as with Illinois Music Education Association as vice president from 1972 to 1980, and president of district III from 1972 to 1984. He has also been a member of the Handbell Musicians of America and as university contact with the Great Lakes division of the National Association for Music Therapy and Music Educators National Conference from 1979 to 1984. Furthermore, Dr. Rosene has been recognized as an adjudicator with the Florida Band Association since 1994, as well as in many other states since 1951.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Rosene has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Teachers College at Illinois State University in 1990, the Distinguished Teaching Award by the Illinois Music Education Association in 1991, the Service Appreciation Award by Malmark, Inc. in 1999, the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the School of Music at Illinois State University in 2001, and induction into the Hall of Fame at Illinois State University in 2010. Dr. Rosene has also been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.

Initially studying to become an engineer, Dr. Rosene was inspired to pursue music education after receiving a music award in high school, followed by a full scholarship from the music department at Illinois State University. The highlight of his prolific career has been the opportunity to watch his students go on to achieve success on their own terms, as well as his tenure as a band director in Pittsfield, IL. He was also especially proud to contribute to the lives of his students, including one who came from a poor family and eventually utilized Dr. Rosene's knowledge and aid to eventually work his way to an engineering degree. Looking toward the future, Dr. Rosene hopes to enjoy his retirement while cementing his legacy as a leader in music education.
