Dr. Hawawini spent the last 35 years of his career employed with INSEAD, The Business School for the World, in Fontainebleau, France, and Singapore. First hired as a senior faculty member and the director of the school's international executive program in 1982, he then served in several capacities during his tenure, including as the Henry Grunfeld chaired professor of investment banking and the associate dean of the Ph.D. program. He led the school's fund-raising campaigns and was appointed dean in 2000, spearheading the institution's global reach with the opening of campuses in Singapore and Abu Dhabi. Having spent his former years in academia teaching at the Baruch College at the City University of New York as an instructor, associate professor, professor of finance and economics, and assistant professor of finance at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University (NYU), Dr. Hawawini has made a significant impact in the lives of many students and colleagues alike, teaching undergraduate, MBA, doctoral and postdoctoral courses, as well as executive development programs.

A former visiting professor at a handful of universities such as The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management since 1986, Dr. Hawawini has also served on many academic boards and in advisory positions throughout his career. He currently serves on the board of trustees for The University of the People, the advisory board for Unnivers, and as a presidential nominee on the visiting committee for the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Furthermore, Dr. Hawawini is active as an advisor for Momentum Invest and as a member of the International Board on Economic Regulations. He has spent an extensive amount of time in consultancy roles for many organizations worldwide, where he has also led executive seminars as well.

Dr. Hawawini has received grant funding from various organizations, including the Yamaichi Research Institute in Japan and the Prochnow Educational Foundation in Wisconsin, all of which contributed to his research efforts. He has authored and co-authored approximately 80 articles to professional journals and has been active as a reviewer, advisory board member, board of editors, associate editor and editor for a number of them. Contributing chapters to several books by other authors, he is the author of 16 of his own books, most recently including "The Internationalization of Higher Education and Business Schools: A Critical Review" through SpringerBriefs in Business in 2016. A longstanding member of the American Finance Association and the American Economic Association, and member and former vice president of the French Financial Association, Dr. Hawawini has spoken on behalf of numerous other professional organizations over the years.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Hawawini immigrated to France in 1965, where he later earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and Master of Science in organic chemistry at the University of Toulouse in 1970 and 1972, respectively. He then earned a Diplome d'Ingenieur at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie de Toulouse and a Chemical Engineering Diploma with distinction at the University of Toulouse in 1972. Traveling to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship, Dr. Hawawini completed a Master of Business Administration with distinction and Ph.D. in finance and economics with distinction at NYU in 1974 and 1977, respectively. The recipient of three honorary PhDs, one from The American University in Cairo in 2010, the ArtCenter College of Design in California in 2005, and the University of Liege in Belgium in 2005, he has also received numerous other accolades, including a Chief Executive Leadership Award from The Council for Advancement and Support of Education in 2006, the Fulbright Award for Global Business Education from the United Nations in New York City and the French Legion of Honor in 2004. Cited in multiple editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Hawawini recently celebrated his 40 year wedding anniversary with his wife Marci Serene Garber in July 2017. They share two children.
