A widely regarded professional in the field of materials engineering, Dr. Emi served as the editor of several scientific and technological publications, including "Materials Transactions" in association with the Japan Institute of Metals (JIM). However, he considers one of his greatest achievements to be industrialization of patents invented out of his research activities in his field of expertise. Dr. Emi maintains active involvement with the Iron & Steel Institute of Japan (ISIJ), JIM, Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST, USA) and Verein Deutscher Eisenhuttenleute.

Prior to pursuing a career in materials engineering, Dr. Emi received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Osaka University in 1958 with honor. Later, he completed a Doctor of Science in 1967 at Hokkaido University. Dr. Emi served as manager of the steelmaking laboratory and research planning department, deputy director of R & D Center and member of the board of directors of Kawasaki Steel Corporation until 1993, while concurrently serving as the president of Rheo-Technology Ltd. for 5 years. He then accepted full professorship at the Institute of Advanced Materials Processing and Graduate School of Tohoku University. During 1998 and 2005, he served as visiting professor at Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, McMaster University, University of Melbourne, Carnegie Mellon University, Seoul National University, Pohang University of Science & Technology and Yonsei University, Korea. In 2007, he was invited to establish and manage the Iron & Steel Research Institute (IRIS) with Sha Steel in China as the director by 2014. Dr. Emi has been recognized as an honorary professor with the University of Science & Technology Beijing and Northeastern University and honorary inaugural director of IRIS in China.

In recognition of his contributions to the scientific community, Dr. Emi was previously selected to receive Tanigawa-Harris Prize (JIM), Distinguished Member and Howe Memorial Lecturer (AIST), the Brinell Medal (Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences), Nishiyama Medal (ISIJ) and International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Award (China). Since the inception of his career, he has been featured in a wide range of honors and publications, including Who's Who in the World, in Finance and Industry and in Science and Engineering.
