JERSEY CITY, NJ, March 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Usha Govindarajulu, Ph.D., M.S., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Govindarajulu is a biostatistician with expertise in frailty models and survival analysis. She currently serves as an assistant professor of biostatistics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, a position she has held since 2012. She previously served as a biostatistician and instructor of medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School from 2007 to 2012, and as a member of the research faculty at Yale University from 2006 to 2007. She began her career in academia at Boston University, where she served as an instructor from 2001 to 2004 and as a research assistant from 1999 to 2004.

Dr. Govindarajulu graduated with a Ph.D. in biostatistics from Boston University in 2004 and continued her training in the field as a postdoctoral research fellow in biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health. She also holds a Master of Science in biostatistics from George Washington University, a Master of Science from University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University. Dr. Govindarajulu decided to pursue a career as a biostatistician only after receiving her undergraduate degree from Cornell University. Her father was a statistician, and he suggested that, given her biology background, she should go into the field of biostatistics. At the time, the field was just emerging, which provided her with a wide range of professional opportunity. Her statistical research interests now focus on survival analysis, frailty models, smoothing, genetic epidemiology, and non-parametrics, and her area of medical expertise is in cardiology, allergy and immunology, radiology and translational research.

One of Dr. Govindarajulu recent publications was recognized by Public Health Minute, a program run out of CUNY Lehman College; they interviewed her on her research which was broadcasted through the network. Dr. Govindarajulu currently serves as program chair-elect for the Section of Statistical Computing of the American Statistical Association. She is also an active member of the American Statistical Association, the International Biometric Society—Eastern North American Region (ENAR), Xi Sigma Pi and the Phi Delta Gamma Honor Society. She also serves as an associate editor of the journal, "Computational Statistics" and a reviewer for "Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology".

Dr. Govindarajulu has received a number of awards and commendations for her outstanding contributions to her field, including the United University Professions Professional Development Award in 2017, the Young Researcher Award by the National Science Foundation in 2007, and the University Fellow Award from George Washington University in 1998. The International Biometric Society ENAR also recognized her with the Associate Student Paper Award in 2002, and she was honored with the Rackham Merit Fellowship by the University of Michigan from 1993 to 1995.

Dr. Govindarajulu also has a creative side. She is the author of "Bend It Like Auntie" and the composer of "Netsap Comedy Mela" and has produced a number of comedy short films. In her free time, she enjoys writing and filming comedy sketch films, playing the piano and writing music, and reading.
