He also spent 31 years with General Electric as vice president of corporate business development, vice president of GE Capital's Consumer Financing Business, and vice president of corporate government relations, and four years as an associate attorney with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enerson.

Well-known for lending his expertise to the local community by serving on the International Committee for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Board of Directors for Tudor Place Historic House and Garden, Mr. Peter formerly spent time as Vice President of the Federal City Council and on the board of trustees for Howard University, and the board of directors and executive committee of the National Bank of Washington, the board of directors and president of the Carlton Club, and as chairman of the Washington representative advisory committee for the National Association of Manufacturers and The Brookings Institution. Mr. Peter also spent several years as chairman and board of directors member of the Bryce Harlow Foundation, an organization that offers fellowships, mentoring and networking opportunities to rising stars in the lobbying, government relations, and related fields.
Mr. Peter earned a JD at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1959, after completing his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia five years prior and serving as a Lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps. For two years. While pursuing his Doctor of Jurisprudence, he was a member of the editorial board of the Virginia Law Review. He was admitted to the California Bar Association in 1959.
A member of the National Order of the Coif, Omicron Delta Kappa, and numerous avocational clubs such as the Coral Beach and Tennis Club and the Eastern Yacht Club, Mr. Peter has been married to Jania Jayne Hutchins since 1961 and has two children.
