Senior Vice Chief in the division of cardiology at Duke University Medical Center for the past three years, Dr. Bashore has also been teaching medicine continuously at Duke Medical Center since 1985. He has served in numerous capacities within the institution, including director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories for 10 years, director of the cardiology fellowship training program for 12 years, and clinical chief of the division of cardiology for six years. Prior to returning to Duke, he also spent a short time in private practice in Fairfax, Virginia, and then as the co-director of cardiovascular nuclear medicine at The Ohio State University.

As an adult congenital heart disease and structural heart disease specialist, Dr. Bashore focuses on working with patients who have complex cardiovascular problems, including those with valvular heart disease, adult congenital heart disease, pericardial, or myocardial disease. Working alongside his colleagues, his research has been focused on the percutaneous treatment of structural heart disease and adult congenital heart disease. Dr. Bashore is one of the founding members of the Duke Heart Center. He also initiated the Duke Valvular Heart Disease Program and the Duke Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program.

Dr. Bashore has authored and coauthored more than 300 manuscripts, 89 book chapters and 3 books, and he has served on various editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and as an associate editor of the American Heart Journal. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the Society of Angiography and Intervention, and the International Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease. He also served on multiple committees at Duke University and Duke Medical Center and with the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Bashore began his career by earning a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology at Miami University in 1968, and a Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University in 1972. He then completed his residency at the University of North Carolina followed by a fellowship in cardiology at the Duke. He is a diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine and certified in cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease.

The recipient of a Eugene Stead Housestaff Teaching Award from Duke University in 1979, 1989 and 2015, Dr. Bashore also received numerous teacher and faculty awards from the trainees at Duke and the medical school, including the Duke Master Clinician/Teacher Award, the Palumbo Faculty Achievement Award and the Duke Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award. In 2018 he received the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Teacher Award. He has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
