He is also the author of the books "Movies, Censorship and the Law" in 1966, "Power and Balance: Introduction to American Constitutional Government" in 1978, and "Cloning and the Constitution: An Inquiry into Governmental Policy and Genetic Experimentation" in 1986. His primary field of study was American politics with a specialty in constitutional law. Long affiliated as a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences, where he served as chairman of the council for three years, and Phi Beta Kappa, where he was President of the University of Illinois campus chapter, Dr. Carmen is best known as the first political scientist to be elected to the Human Genome Organization.

An avid runner for four decades and now a competitive octogenarian, he reflects: "Running is an athletic analogue of teaching and research. You are solely responsible for the level of performance you attain."
