With more than 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Rasmussen retired from and sold his company, Sell Publishing Company, in 1993, having worked there as president and CEO since 1968. Prior to obtaining this role, he served as a publisher with Thomson Newspapers at the Greenville (OH) Daily Advocate from 1965 to 1968, having been an administration assistant to the new publisher at the Herald after Thomson's takeover from 1962 to 1965. Earlier in his career, he worked 25 years, from 1927 to 1962, for the Austin (MN) Herald, Herald Publishing Company, owned by his parents.
Mr. Rasmussen entered the newspaper field at the age of 12 at the Herald. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1951, returning to the company until it was sold in 1962, working in each department during his time there and rising to the position of production coordinator for the newspaper and vice president of the corporation. He later retired from the corporate world and, returning to his roots, purchased the weekly Forest Lake (MN) Times and its production plant, growing it from 12 employees to 65 when he sold it to a former Minnesota governor in 1993.
Mr. Rasmussen credits much of his success to his ability to keep up with the changing offset process, including working with 3M on experimental printing processes. Finding that he preferred the reporting and editorial side, he hired a sales expert, who remained with him for 20 years handling sales. Throughout his career, Mr. Rasmussen's newspaper has received awards and honors from state and national organizations. In 1987, he received an award of merit for distinguished service in the field of freedom of information from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi, and he received an award from the Minnesota Newspaper Association for the Best All Around Newspaper in 1970. He received the "On Behalf of Youth Award" for his contributions in 1994 from the Forest Lake Area Youth Service Bureau.
Mr. Rasmussen was the initiator of the Community Scholarship Foundation program for Forest Lake which has brought scholarships to many individuals seeking to further their education. Over $1.5 million has been awarded so far. In his free time, Mr. Rasmussen enjoys sailing, bicycling, fishing, photography and writing letters to the editor.
