Since 1988, Dr. Lanza has held the title of chief emeritus of the Endoscopic Training Program at the Ben Taub General Hospital—Harris Health. He has served that hospital for more than 45 years, having acted as a member of the medical staff since 1972, and as chief of the Endoscopic Training Program from 1970 to 1988. Additionally, Dr. Lanza has also served as clinical professor of medicine in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Baylor College of Medicine since 1981, after having previously served as clinical associate professor of medicine for nine years. He also currently serves as a member of the staff of the Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, a position he has held since 1966. Other roles Dr. Lanza has held during his career include his position as chief of medicine at both the Sharpstown General Hospital and the Bellaire General Hospital, and as a consultant at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and the Southwest Hospital of Memorial Herrmann. Early in his career, he acted as attending physician in digestive diseases at Houston Methodist and as a clinical assistant internist with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Lanza graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Arts in biochemistry. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in bacteriology from the University of Maryland. After receiving his MD, he continued his education as an intern at the United States Public Health Service Hospital (now known as the Billy Seaton Hospital). In 1965, he completed his residency at the Baylor College of Medicine and began his career in the industry as a fellow in gastroenterology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Texas and is recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Gastroenterology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He currently serves as a member of the editorial committee of "Gastroprotection News," a position he has held since 1993, and previously acted as a consulting editor with the "Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine." He has published more than 115 articles in professional journals and chapters in books, and he has presented his research on more than 100 occasions.

Dr. Lanza currently applies his expertise in gastroenterology as a member of the International Scientific Board of the Digestive and Liver Diseases, as a member of the Colorectal Oncology Working Group Legislative Task Force, as director of the Houston Institute for Clinical Research, and as principal investigator of the Houston Institute for Clinical Research. He also served as a team physician with the Houston Rockets for more than 20 years. Dr. Lanza is a member of the American Numismatic Association and an active member of the Texas Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has served on dozens of committees and has held a number of leadership positions with the American College of Gastroenterology. He was also former president of the American College of Gastroenterology and a former member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Texas Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, the Houston Society of Internal Medicine, the Houston Gastroenterological Society, and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Additionally, Dr. Lanza also served as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology.

The Baylor College of Medicine honored Dr. Lanza for his work at the institute as Hilda Raphael Schwartz Distinguished Lecturer in Gastroenterology in 2008, as Outstanding Teacher in Gastroenterology in the GI Fellowship Program in 1987, and as Outstanding Faculty Member in 1986. He was also honored as Outstanding Physician of the Year of the Houston Gulf Coast by the National Foundation for Ileitis & Colitis in 1989 and as the recipient of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Borden Undergraduate Research Award in 1970. In recognition of his success in the field, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Sigma Xi. Dr. Lanza was born in Trenton, NJ, to Leo Michael Lanza and Jennie (Petrino) Lanza. A United States Army veteran, he applied his expertise in medicine in service to his country as a Specialist, Third Class, with the Brooke Army Hospital from 1954 to 1957. He has been married to Alice Folz for more than 60 years. They have five children: Joseph, Frank Jr., Jeanne, Alicia and Leo Michael II.
