With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Land has been recognized as a professor emeritus with Duke University since 2014, having been the John Franklin Crowell Professor of Sociology with the school since 1990. Since his retirement, he has also been a research professor of the school's Social Science Research Institute. In addition to his primary role, he served as chair of the department of sociology from 1986 to 1997 and as a professor of sociology from 1986 to 1990. Prior to joining Duke University, Dr. Land was a professor of sociology with the University of Texas at Austin from 1981 to 1986, and a professor with the University of Illinois from 1976 to 1981, having been an associate professor since 1973. Earlier in his career, he was a lecturer with Columbia University from 1970 to 1973 and a staff associate with the Russell Sage Foundation from 1969 to 1973.
An expert in demography, criminology and quality of life research, Dr. Land began his career at Texas Lutheran College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. Encouraged to continue his education by his mentors, he went on to study at the University of Texas, completing a Master of Arts in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.
A respected leader in the field, Dr. Land is affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is the former president of the Southern Sociological Society, the International Society for Quality of Life Studies, and the International Sociological Association's working group on social indicators and social reporting. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Sociological Research Association, the American Society of Criminology, and an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association.
Dr. Land has written extensively in his areas of expertise, authoring and co-authoring a number of books as well as multiple articles in professional journals. He has also served as an associate editor, advisory editor, deputy editor, editor, and editorial consultant for nearly 30 journals, and he has consulted with a variety of institutions and given presentations at symposia and conferences. The recipient of a Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award from the Methodology section of the American Sociological Association in 1997, Dr. Land also received a Distinguished Service Award from the International Society for Quality of Life Studies in 2003.
