Dr. Birkelund has been a sociologist and tenured professor of sociology at the University of Oslo in Norway for nearly 20 years. Currently teaching four courses, SOS4001 Sociological Theory, SOS4100 Social Stratification: Class, Gender and Ethnicity, SOS2001 Modern Social Theory, and SOS2603 the Scandinavian Welfare Society: Contemporary Perspectives, she has also been a senior researcher at The Institute for Analytical Sociology at Linköping University in Sweden since 2013. An expert in theory development, she maintains an interest in analytical sociology, social stratification, labor market studies, gender and ethnicity.

A former research director for the Institute for Social Research of the Norwegian Research Council for two years, Dr. Birkelund began her career in academia in 1985 when she was first taken on board as an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Bergen in Norway. Two years later, she had become an associate professor, remaining in that capacity for 10 years before moving to Oslo, where she worked two years at Institute for Social Research before she was hired as a tenured professor of sociology at the University of Oslo.

During her career, Dr. Birkelund has been a visiting professor at several universities, including the University of Oxford, CREST at ENSAE, and GEMASS, Paris, University of Essex, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and was named an honorary fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Serving on more than 25 doctoral committees during her tenure, she has also organized close to 10 Ph.D. courses, as well as several professional conferences. Dr. Birkelund has served on multiple committees, and she is affiliated with several professional organizations. She has served as the president of the Norwegian Sociological Association, and she has, since 2009, been Chair of the Executive Committee for the Inter-University Center at Dubrovnik. She is a fellow and Vice Chairman of the section of the Humanities and Social Science Division at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and a fellow and Council member of the European Academy of Sociology. Furthermore, she has authored dozens of articles in refereed journals, as well as editorials, book reviews, newspaper articles and Norwegian articles in several books. Additionally, she has spent years on several journal editorial boards, including as a member of the international editorial board for "Social Forces" since 2011.

Successful in generating research funding, Dr. Birkelund has recently been the recipient of grants from the Horizon2020 program of the European Union, the Norwegian Research Council and the City Council of Oslo. Locally involved as a former assistant member of the board for Arbeidsdirektoratet, Ministry of Work, in Norway, she has been honored for her work by being included in five editions of Who's Who in the World. A proud mother of three children, Dr. Birkelund holds a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate, all through the University of Bergen.
