ALAMONTE SPRINGS, FL, April 18, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Victor L. Granatstein, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Granatstein celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Retiring from academia in 2016 as a professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park, Dr. Granatstein is well-known for his research in electromagnetic radiation from relativistic electron beams, advanced concepts in millimeter wave tubes and the effects of high power microwaves on electronic circuits and systems. A faculty member for over 30 years, he formerly served as the executive director and director of research for the Center for Applied Electromagnetics on campus for a total of five years and was the director of the Institute for Plasma Research (now the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics) on campus for 10 years. Prior to joining the university, Dr. Granatstein was the head of the high power electromagnetic radiation branch for the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., from 1972 to 1983, and a research staff physicist for Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, from 1964 to 1972. He was a Sackler professor of special standing and a visiting professor at Tel Aviv University and a visiting lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as well.

Dr. Granatstein holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Columbia University. He has authored and co-authored some 250 research papers in scientific journals, contributed chapters to several books, co-edited three books, and authored "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications," published in 2007, with its second edition released in 2012.

His engineering research centered on development of cutting-edge high-power millimeter-wave sources for advanced applications. He led the development of the first high-power millimeter-wave gyrotron oscillator in the U.S. and its subsequent deployment in the first successful heating of electrons in a large tokamak; this heating technique has become an important component of Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion reactor research. He also patented the gyrotron amplifier, a version of it is now employed in the strategic radar facility on Kwajelein Island. He also demonstrated gyrotron amplifier operation near a pulsed power level of 100 megawatts demonstrating its possible applicability to driving advanced electron accelerators and colliders used in High Energy Physics research.

An elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), lifetime member and former vice chairman of the plasma science committee, Dr. Granatstein received the Plasma Science and Application Award from the organization in 1991. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society. Dr. Granatstein holds a number of patents on active and passive microwave devices, was the recipient of numerous awards including the Robert L. Woods Award for Excellence in Electronics Technology and the Captain Robert Dexter Conrad Award for Scientific Achievement from the Secretary of the Navy, and was named an Honoree Sackler Lecturer for the 2010-2011 academic year. A Fulbright senior scholar from 1993 to 1994 and a Fulbright senior specialist in 2003, and again from 2004 to 2005, he has been highlighted in countless editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Married since 1955 to Bethie Mills, Dr. Granatstein is the father of three children and grandfather of five grandchildren. He loves swimming, folk dancing and teaching Yiddish.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Victor L. Granatstein, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
