A respected educator in the field of computer science, Dr. Lidtke has been recognized as a professor emerita with Towson University since 2002. She initially joined the university in 1968 as an assistant professor of computer science. In this role, Dr. Lidtke was recognized as the first person to teach with the program, which has continued to grow over the course of the last 50 years. Although Dr. Lidtke is now retired, she continues to be recognized as an expert in programming languages, software engineering, social and ethical issues, and computer science education.

Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Lidtke received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon in 1952. She went on to serve as a programmer analyst with the Shell Development Company and University of California, Berkeley, before joining Lansing Community College as an assistant professor in 1963. She briefly served as an educational specialist with Johns Hopkins University before transitioning into an educational role with Towson University. While serving as an assistant professor of computer science, Dr. Lidtke completed a PhD through the University of Oregon in 1979. Between 1984 and 1993, she served the National Science Foundation in a variety of roles, including as an associate program manager and program director.

Dr. Lidtke was recognized as a professor with Towson University from 1990 until her retirement in 2002. She is a fellow with the CSAB and ABET, as well as a member of the Association of Education Data Systems, National Education Computer Conference and IEEE Computer Society. In addition, Dr. Lidtke is the former president and vice president of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board. She was previously involved with ACM, Inc, as a member of the special interest group board, chairman and member of the education board. Dr. Lidtke is also a former chairman and vice chairman of the National Education Computer Conference.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Lidtke has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women. She most recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Department of Computer and Informational Sciences at Towson University in 2014. Previously, she was named the recipient of the Distinguished Alumna Award by the John Hopkins University Alumni Association in 2011.
