Mr. Alexanderson is a mathematician, writer and educator who currently serves as the Michael and Elizabeth Valeriote Professor of Science at Santa Clara University.

Mr. Alexanderson is a mathematician, writer and educator who currently serves as the Michael and Elizabeth Valeriote Professor of Science at Santa Clara University. Since beginning his career as a mathematics instructor in 1958, he has held a number of roles with the institution, including associate and assistant professor, chair of the department of mathematics and natural sciences, and vice dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. From 1967 to 2002, shortly after his term as coordinator of the honors program, he chaired the department of mathematics. For more than 40 years, he was also the associate director of the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, which awards cash prizes and scholarships to undergraduate students in the United States and Canada.

Outside of his longstanding commitment to Santa Clara University, Mr. Alexanderson was a lecturer at Stanford University, from which he received a Master of Science in 1958. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon. He has chaired the board of trustees for the American Institute of Mathematics for nearly 25 years and was president of the Mathematical Association of America from 1997 to 1998. With the latter organization, he was a member of numerous committees and held the positions of secretary, chairman and secretary-treasurer of a local chapter. As a member of Phi Beta Kappa, he served on committees related to membership, professional development and publications and was also a trustee of the Phi Beta Kappa Foundation.

In addition to his status as a renowned mathematician and educator, Mr. Alexanderson has written 18 books, including "The Random Walks of George Polya," "More Mathematical People" and "A G.H. Hardy Reader." He was formerly an associate editor of the American Mathematical Monthly and editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1986 to 1990. He received the Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Yueh-gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service from the Mathematical Association of America in 2005. Santa Clara University presented him with the President's Special Recognition Award in 1978 and the Joseph Bayma Award for Scholarship in 1996.
