Carole Pateman, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    CARDIFF, WALES, May 07, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Carole Pateman, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Pateman is a distinguished professor emeritus in the department of political science at the University of California at Los Angeles. A recognized expert in political theory, including democratic theory, theories of an original contract, the sexual contract and the settler contract and feminist political theory, she taught at the university for 21 years. Teaching a variety of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, some of these included Democratic Theory, History of Feminist Political Thought, Multiculturalism, Women and Politics, and Political Theorists and the Animals.

An international career that enabled Dr. Pateman to live on four different continents and teach and conduct research on three of them, Dr. Pateman was a visiting professor, adjunct professor and research professor at a number of colleges, including Princeton University and Stanford University in the United States, the Australian National University and Cardiff University in Wales. In 2001, Dr. Pateman was also named an honorary professor at Cardiff University. She has been serving on the board of directors for the Ethikon Institute in California since 1996, a non-profit organization that publishes a series of books in comparative ethics and organizes dialogue conferences on moral issues of current importance. She formerly served as the organization's vice chair and twice served on its board of directors. She has also been a member of the international advisory board for the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences since 1994.

The author of nine books, including "The Sexual Contract" in 1988, which was later translated into nine different languages, "The Disorder of Women: Democracy, Feminism and Political Theory" in 1990, which was translated into Croatian and Japanese, and "Contract & Domination" with Charles Mills in 2007, Dr. Pateman has also contributed more than 20 articles on various topics in peer-reviewed journals such as "Political Studies" and "Perspectives On Politics. In 2003, she contributed a chapter, "Freedom and Democratization: Why Basic Income Should be Preferred to Basic Capital", in the book, "The Ethics of Stakeholding". Furthermore, Dr. Pateman served as a series editor for "Ethikon Series in Comparative Ethics," was an associate editor for the Journal of Political Philosophy, a contemporary politics advisory editor of the book series "Theories of Institutional Design," and a member of the editorial board for several other publications such as The British Journal of Political Science and the Journal of Political Ideologies.

Honored to be selected to serve as the first female president of the International Political Science Association from 1991 to 1994, Dr. Pateman also served as president of the American Political Science Association and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Learned Society of Wales. A longtime member of the U.K. Political Science Association, where she received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, she also received a Victoria Schuck Award and a Benjamin E. Lippincolt Award from the American Political Science Association.

The recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship from 1993 to 1994, Dr. Pateman also received a Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science in 2012 and a Special Recognition Award by the U.K. Political Studies Association in 2013. In 2015, the Australasian Political Studies Association created the Carole Pateman Prize for the best book on gender and politics.

Born in Maresfield, Sussex, England, Dr. Pateman earned a Diploma in Political Science and Economics at Ruskin College in England, followed by a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at Oxford University. She received two honorary Doctor of Letters degrees, one from the Australian National University in 1998 and the other from the National University of Ireland in 2005. She also received an honorary Doctor of Social Science from Helsinki University in 2006. Dr. Pateman has been included in the seventh edition of Who's Who in American Education, as well as several editions of Who's Who of American Women.
