Now retired from a lengthy and fulfilling career as an English professor, Dr. Douglas spent almost four decades teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Having begun working as a technical editor for Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1958, two years after earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Lafayette College, he later served as an editor for the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Illinois for five years. Dr. Douglas then became an instructor in the department of English before transitioning into roles as an assistant and associate professor. After teaching American literature for more than 30 years, he retired as a full professor in 1999.

Dr. Douglas is the author of several books on American culture, including "H.L. Mencken Critic of American Life," "Rail City, Chicago, USA," "Edmund Wilson's America," and "Women of the Twenties." He also wrote "The Early Days of Radio Broadcasting," "All Aboard: The Railroad in American Life," "Education without Impact: How Our Universities Fail the Young," and "The Golden Age of the Newspaper." In addition to contributing articles to professional journals, he has edited numerous books and been a resource for reference materials and documentaries. A member of the Modern Language Association, the American Studies Association and the Association for Business Communication, he served as editor of the Journal of Business Communications from 1968 to 1980.
